After retirement, George volunteered with AARP Tax Aid and helped prepare individual tax returns for free. He was a member of the River Road Unitarian Church in Bethesda, Maryland, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Wilmington.

George was preceded in death by a brother, Gary, and a son, Dave. He is survived by his wife Barbara, who still lives in Wilmington, and his son, Scott, and his two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Logan, from Montgomery County, Maryland.

As George wished, his body has been cremated and will be interred at a family plot in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Fairfax, Missouri, and his family will have a small private ceremony to celebrate his life.
