• Readers of the Mail who note a shortage of items in the personal column and social notes this week can attribute it to the fact that Miss Joan Scamman, who has been serving as a reporter for this newspaper during the summer months, has quit to make preparations to resume her college studies this fall.

• Dave Bradley, one of Rock Port’s best bluerock shooters, left late last week for Vandalia, Ohio, where he is attending the Grand American Handicap tournament this week. The tournament is the “daddy” of all bluerock competitions in the U.S. There were three days of preliminaries and then, starting Monday, six full days of competition. Vandalia is near Dayton.

• The pulpit committee of the Rock Port Lutheran Church has been advised by Rev. Louis C. Weitzenkamp of Wakeeney, Kansas, that he will accept the pastorate of the Rock Port and Langdon churches.

• Two prisoners held in the county jail made their escape some time between midnight Sunday and 5:00 o’clock Monday morning. Using a piece of hacksaw which they had concealed, a bar was sawed on the small service window in the cell room door and the latch on the door was lifted from its hasp. They stole Sheriff Joe Gaines’ .38 caliber revolver from his desk. One prisoner was caught following a train search in Tarkio on Tuesday afternoon. The other criminal is still loose.

August 17, 1972

• Atchison County Girl Scouts recently attended the third annual conference of Missouri Youth for Environmental Quality at Central Missouri State College, Warrensburg. Focus for study and action during the session was water pollution. Those attending were Dayan Garst, Watson; Chrissy Schmidt, Tarkio; and Sue Meier, Jill Vette, Susan Wessler, and Mrs. Paul Wessler, Westboro. Sharman Vette, Tarkio, was chosen as an alternate delegate.

• An Oregon, Missouri, teenager was killed at Big Lake after she fell into the water while skiing and was hit by a boat that was following hers. Rock Port men Gilbert Burke and Bill Bunton, who were sitting on a nearby dock, went out to the scene in a boat and picked up the girl and transferred her to a dock. Burke administered mouth to mouth resuscitation for approximately half an hour. The teen was transported by ambulance to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

• Miss Emily Walter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Walter, Rock Port, was the winner of the Senior All-Around Cowgirl trophy at the Burlington Junction Junior Rodeo held August 5-6. To receive the trophy, Emily was a top place winner in all the events she entered.

August 14, 1997

• The Rock Port elementary twirlers held a summer baton recital on Saturday, July 26. They performed basic twirls and a twirling routine to “Wild Wild West,” which they will showcase at the first home football game half-time show.

• The .005 cent sales tax passed for the City of Rock Port. This does away with city car stickers and personal property tax for the City of Rock Port. The tax passed 111 yes, 31 no.

• Mr. and Mrs. Earle Hall’s yard at 705 Underwood Drive was selected as Yard of the Month by the Rock Port Garden Club, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
