August 29, 1947

• While Everett Kruse was convalescing at Winter General Hospital in Topeka several months ago, he used some of his spare time to make a pair of book ends. The uprights and bases are made of walnut which he finished himself and on each base is a brass cannon, with ammunition piled nearby.

• Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Steele celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary August 23. John Steele met Jennie Wren when both were teachers in the Atchison County schools. After living and teaching elsewhere, the Steeles returned to the farm west of Fairfax about 50 years ago. The farm is where Mr. Steele was born and where his father was the original settler.

• Friday night, Jim Mayes got off a northbound bus at Fairfax. Soon afterwards, he discovered his billfold and $88 was missing. He contacted the ticket agent, who phoned to Sidney, Iowa, and caught the bus there. His billfold and money were found in the seat he had been riding in.

• George M. Bilby and Col. Glade B. Bilby will be hosting the 4-State Round-up rodeo. George is a bronc buster himself and never asks another cowboy to ride a bronc he will not try himself. Col. Glade made headlines back in 1943 when he dropped the first American bomb on the Germans in the campaign in Egypt. Glade had so much contempt for the Nazis that he flew low enough to express his feelings vocally. They threw their helmets at him.

August 31, 1972

• In Craig News – Mr. and Mrs. Dale Felumb and Kirby returned from Thursday by air from a guest tour to Reno, Nevada, where they attended the showing of International Harvester trucks and vacation equipment. Movie star and TV personality Van Johnson was host of the showing.

• Kiwanians Bob Alldredge and Harry Emrick displayed a recent delivery of popcorn cartons to go on sale immediately.The same product was sold last fall by the club and proved so popular that supplies were soon exhausted.

• Hat sales were booming Saturday as Beta Sigma Phi members opened their fall sales campaign of Fairfax booster hats. The green and white hats are offered in two styles and a variety of sizes.

• The second annual community auction will be staged in Fairfax Friday evening. Hickory barbecued beef sandwiches and drinks will be served with the assistance of Beta Sigma Phi sorority women. The food will be served from the Dale Martin seed corn building. The auction will be held in front of the R.L. Cundall building. Proceeds will be used to add to the upgraded Christmas decorations.

August 28, 1997

• A carry-in dinner was held Sunday at the Fire House Community Room in Fairfax to visit and get re-acquainted with Rev. Ralph and Jewel Holland of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. Rev. Holland was pastor at Fairfax Baptist Church in the 1950s.

• Xi Lambda sorority chapter selected the following yards of the month: Rex Bradbury, Eunice Rader, Mark and Shelly Cofer, and Fern and Norman Simmons.
