September 5, 1947

• Starting on a long journey which is being made by train and plane, Mrs. Clifford Coats of Tarkio (the former Miss Charlene Beck) left Monday evening on the first leg of a trip which will take her to Anchorage, Alaska, where she will join her husband, who is in the army. Going by train as far as Great Falls, Montana, Mrs. Coats will take a plane from that point forward. She expected to reach Alaska on Saturday.

• A recent issue of the Chico Record, Chico, California, has come to the Mail desk showing a full page advertisement for the opening of the Park Inn Cafe, of which Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wood, recent Rock Port residents, are proprietors.

• Rock Port’s incoming or out-of-town teachers are making their homes with the persons mentioned or using other arrangements: Miss Lois Mae Hawkins for the time being is driving back and forth to Tarkio; Miss Barbara Patterson is living in Mrs. Mabel Newlon’s home; Miss Barbara Anderson has quarters at the Hall Warren home; Miss Bertha Kemper, as in previous school terms, has a room at the home of Miss Hattie Robertson.

• One student from Atchison County was among the 350 graduates awarded degrees from the University of Missouri at commencement exercises August 29. James Irving Pedigo of Watson received a Master’s Degree in education. Mr. Pedigo is superintendent of the Watson schools last year and again heads that school this year.

August 31, 1972

• Wayne L. Landen, Omaha, Nebraska, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Landen of Rock Port, is now Systems Director of Microfilm for Mutual of Omaha. This system reduced each 34,000 page set of policies and riders to 160 microfilm cards. This system is expected to be the first of several future microfilm uses in the company.

• Jim Allen has returned to the car sales business. He will be operating Allen Motors with his son, Jim, Jr., in partnership, which will be located on the corner of Mill and Main streets in Rock Port.

• Staff Sergeant Donald B. Heckel, a 1966 graduate of Rock Port High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. Loraine L. Heckel of Rock Port, is on duty at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai AFB, Thailand. Sgt. Heckel, an administrative specialist, is assigned to a unit of the Pacific Air Forces, headquarters for air operations in Southeast Asia, the Far East, and the Pacific area.

• Rock Port football fans are in for a real treat when the nationally famous Marching Mizzou band will make a guest appearance at the Rock Port vs. Fairfax football game Friday night, October 13. Among almost 220 members of the band will be Rock Port High School graduates Larry Chapple and Jackie Burke.

August 28, 1997

• McDonald’s is now open and is an active part of the Rock Port community. Members of the Rock Port Chamber of Commerce and well wishers gathered Friday, August 22, for the ribbon cutting at the new location, which is located at the I-29 and Hwy. 136 interchange.

• Mike Pfeil was sitting in his freshly painted and newly refurbished 1987 Chrysler LeBaron just looking through a bank statement when “KaBoom!” – an explosion and a ball of fire shot out from under the hood. Mike bailed out and escaped injury, but the LeBaron and everything inside, including his cellular telephone, were a total loss.
