September 19, 1947
• Army of occupation medals for those who served in Germany during the period of 1918 to 1923 after the close of World War I are now available. The medals will carry the likeness of General John J. Pershing.
• A boosters club that will really boost Tarkio and support all activities of civic benefit by active participations is the avowed purpose and plan of the interested group who organized at a meeting Tuesday night at the Community Building. So far there are 57 members. Dues are $10 per year.
• A temperature range of 39.5 to 92.9 occurred in the past week’s period with the low figure occurring at 6:30 a.m. September 15 and the high at 4:30 p.m. September 17.
September 21, 1972
• The “Yard of the Month” winners include: Mr. and Mrs. Granville Shisler, 408 Maple; Mrs. Helen Stevens, 411 Pine; Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Freeman, 904 Pine; Mr. and Mrs. John Evans, 801 Maple; and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schmidt, 1110 Elm.
• Dick Smith, a recent graduate of Northwest and son of Mrs. Lloyd Smith of Tarkio, has secured a position as zone manager for International Harvester Corporation in North Platte, Nebraska.
• The Headstart Center at Brown Gymnasium on the Tarkio College campus is in need of clothing of all sizes, especially children’s clothing. The clothing will be distributed to low income families in the Tarkio area.
• There have been several instances of gunfire damage to telephone equipment in the area, causing phone disruption. While stray gunfire may not cause immediate disruption, open holes can cause outages as weather changes. Hunters are asked to use caution.
September 18, 1997
• Fog put a damper on some of the activities scheduled at the fly-in and rededication ceremony at Gould Peterson Memorial Airport in Tarkio September 14. Airplanes and helicopters that were to fly in for the event and offer rides were unable to land but that didn’t stop everyone in attendance from having a good time. “Mr. Airport” Jim Cox cut the ribbon at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
• A police pursuit of a suspect involved in a burglary that occurred in Tecumseh, Nebraska, traveled into Atchison County at 3:00 a.m. September 11. Atchison County deputies continued the pursuit into Nodaway County, where the highway patrol would be able to take over. North of Wilcox, the suspect vehicle rammed one Atchison County car in an attempt to evade another roadblock and the deputies’ vehicle collided with a patrol vehicle. The suspects’ vehicle was stopped by a tire deflation device. The criminals fled on foot, but were later apprehended in Maryville, Missouri.
• Tarkio R-I Band students and parents washed 54 cars in three hours on September 13 to raise funds to purchase new color guard uniforms. NAPA of Tarkio provided the cleaning supplies and $215 in free-will donations were collected along with $400 in sponsorships.
• Atchison County was represented by over 50 people at the William Jewell Cardinals’ football team home opener, as Tarkio R-I graduates Eric Levings and Travis Chambers and Rock Port R-II graduate Ryan Kingery were on the starting offense. Also on the team are Nic Poptanycz of Tarkio and Tyler Gebhards of Rock Port. Mandy Martin is on the William Jewell dance team and Amy Slaughter is in the jazz band, both of which also performed at the game.
