The Fairfax Kiwanis Club will dedicate the large rolling flag in the Fairfax R-3 School gym  Tuesday, September 27, between volleyball games (approximately 6:00 p.m.). The flag will be dedicated in memory of Doyne Swan, Betty Wennihan, and Jack Kruse.

The impressive large rolling flag was selected and purchased by the Fairfax Kiwanis Club with memorial money designated by the families of these three devoted Kiwanis members as a tribute to them. The Kiwanis Club felt with these members’ past military services, dedication to their community and to their school alumni, with the approval of all families involved, that this was a perfect remembrance. Local citizens were honored to assist in the installation on the north end of the gym ceiling.

Doyne, a World War II veteran and a mechanic in the Army Air Corps, was a longstanding Kiwanis member and one of the oldest Fairfax alumni, attending the alumni banquet each year. He was an avid supporter of school organizations and events. Doyne served in many capacities in the Kiwanis Club, the last as collecting members’ monthly dues.

Betty, a hairdresser in the Fairfax community and dedicated Fairfax alumna, was widely known for all the school memorabilia and participation in school activities and events. The contributions she enthusiastically gathered and historically composed remain in the front lobby showcase in the Fairfax gym. Betty served as Kiwanis secretary many years.

Jack, an early graduate of Fairfax High School, joined the Navy and served as a communication specialist. Jack, too, remained true to his school. His father, Marvin Kruse, was a longtime teacher, mentor and superintendent. Jack was a construction engineer for many years, contributing to great changes. He served as president of the Kiwanis at one time.

The public is encouraged to join the honorees’ families, Kiwanis members, school staff and students at this memorable dedication on September 27.
