The Rock Port Blue Jays hosted the Osborn/Stewartsville WildCards Friday, September 9, for  Homecoming.

The first quarter was a defensive battle and neither team could manage to find the end zone on offense. Rock Port showed signs in the first quarter that they could move the ball but couldn’t quite punch it in. The Jays’ defense held up, only allowing the WildCards to go past mid-field only once.

To start the second quarter, the Jays were sitting on the WildCards’ 36 yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Aidan Burke hit Corbyn Jakub on a crossing pattern at the 25. Jakub took it down to the one to set up runningback Phillip Herron, who scored on a one yard dive. Osborn/Stewartsville wasted no time following the kick-off to answer back with a long catch and run for six. Rock Port’s next big break came when defensive lineman Trulin Pankau shot through the gap and caused a fumble which he recovered, giving the Jays the ball on their own 36 yard line. Rock Port moved the ball down to the two yard line on big runs from Aidan Burke and Micah Makings, before Phillip Herron was hit which caused him to fumble. Osborn/Stewartsville would go the length of the field in a series of good runs and penalties that allowed them to take the lead 8-14. The Jays would run down the field with Aidan Burke and Micah Makings leading the way. On a flare route, runningback Phillip Herron would shed one defender and take it 25 yards for a touchdown. The Jays would go into halftime with a two point lead, 16-14.

The second half, the Jays’ defense would come up big not allowing the WildCards to reach the end zone. Trulin Pankau had a good game with 10 tackles, two sacks, and causing a fumble and recovery. Corbyn Jakub would intercept the WildCards and take it back for six, followed by Phillip Herron intercepting the ball on the 31 yard line of the WildCards. The final score was 52-14.

The Jays are home again this week as they take on Nodaway Valley Friday, September 16. The game begins at 7:00 p.m.
