September 26, 1947

• Grover Cleveland Farley died at the veterans hospital in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, September 21 at the age of 60 years, 5 months, and 23 days. He came with his parents to the Irish Grove neighborhood as an infant and with the exception of the period he spent in the army during WWI, had lived here his whole life. Grover followed the trade of painting and interior decorating and was proficient in his work and his services were always in demand.

• George W. Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Carter of Fairfax, graduated from the School of Mortuary Science in Kansas City, Kansas, September 19. Mr. and Mrs. Carter plan to live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

• Louis Bell has a new Ford and he is one of the very few people who has had a new car this year and didn’t do a lot of hunting before he got one, nor spent a lot of money. Louis and Mrs. Bell drove down to Mound City Saturday evening to take in the fair, where Louis spent 50 cents on a ticket for a chance to win a car. Sure enough, that ticket drew the car.

• Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Donelson had a rare feast for their evening meal Tuesday. Mrs. Donelson’s brother, Lee Petree, sent them a bear steak from Deer Creek, Oregon, and Harlan says it was delicious meat.

September 28, 1972

• Mr. and Mrs. Richard Thiesfeld were high bidders on the Ray Patterson property in North Fairfax last Saturday. Bidding was lively at the auction of personal and real property. The house and land brought in excess of $16,000.

• The Forum has not been issued a voluntary explanation for the power outage Tuesday morning, but an item in the Maryville Daily Forum reports on difficulties in that area which we assume accounts for local problems.

• Mrs. Roger Southard has accepted a position at the Fairfax Community Hospital as an office clerk and began her duties last week.

• Newell D. Green was one of seven men receiving the active DeMolay Legion of Honor certificate and medal at investiture ceremonies Friday evening at Kansas City. Green was a charter member of the Dr. McMichael chapter at Rock Port which was formed in the fall of 1922.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “What a difference a week makes! When I went to the hospital, the school building project was to the square. One week later, the roofs are on and both buildings are shingled.” “Thought for the day… ‘the best way to keep children at home is to make home a pleasant atmosphere and to let the air of out of the tires.’”

• A new business is opening in Fairfax October 1. Helene Lawrence, Sandy (Mrs. Tim) Umbarger and Lisa Reed decided to open a craft store for three months in the old Fairfax depot. They have secured other crafters in the area to display their wares as well.
