October 3, 1947

• Those famous “Gentlemen of Song” the Guardsmen Quartet of Hollywood, will be heard Tuesday night, October 7, at David Rankin Hall. This famous male quartet has been constantly engaged in motion pictures, radio, and concert. Among their movies are “Blue Skies,” “It All Came True,” “Navy Blues,” “Harvest Moon,” “Two Girls from Boston,” “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” “Coney Island,” “Atlantic City,” “Bowery to Broadway,” “Frisco Sal,” “Strawberry Blond,” and short subjects, “The Gay Nineties,” “Grandfather’s Follies,” and “Barber Shop Follies.”

• The Westboro High School Wildcats ran wild over the Horace Mann high school six-man football team on the Westboro gridiron last Friday night with a 48-0 score. The game ended at the start of the fourth quarter when Westboro had made enough points to call the game.

October 5, 1972

• Members of the Tarkio High School Student Council are Don Broermann, Derek Meek, John Seymour (vice-president), Duke Nuckolls (student body president), Cheryl Freeman, Joyce Lang (reporter), Patti Austin, Denise Davidson (secretary), and Blake Hurst.

• First place winners of the Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition held in Tarkio were Jim Ball of Fairfax and Rodney Kenagy, Joel Wineman, Jamie Seymour, George Nixon, and Jeff McGehee, all of Tarkio. The competition was sponsored by H.H. Wright Motors. They will travel to the Zone Competition in St. Joseph this Saturday to compete.

• Les Hogue, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hogue, and Miss Debby Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Davis, were crowned Tarkio High School Homecoming King and Queen in ceremonies after the game last Friday.

October 2, 1997

• Five Atchison County families received the Century Farm designation for their family farms. They are Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Boettner, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Burke, Mr. and Mrs. John Howell, Marilyn Burg DeBruin, and the Dunham Heirs, known as Fourteen Pines Corporation.

• Helen Scamman, a resident of Community Care of America in Tarkio, celebrated her 100th birthday Thursday, September 25, 1997. Helen’s only relatives, niece, Mary Margaret Spurlock of Rock Port, and nephew, Robert L. Jones of Winter Haven, Florida, were in attendance to celebrate.

• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Danceworks Academy in Tarkio. The academy is owned and instructed by Kara Napierala.

• Donnie Dockins of Tarkio grew a 91 pound watermelon. It was planted May 10, 1997, and grew from the only plant Dockins had.

• Fall harvest got underway for area farmers last week. According to state officials, Missouri row crops are progressing faster than normal. Eighty percent of beans are turning color and 90 percent of corn has reached maturity. Officials report that 30 percent of this year’s crop has already been harvested.
