October 1 marks the beginning of the financial aid season for this year’s graduating seniors. This is the date that the online version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA, becomes available.

Families may complete this form, which is the foundation for student aid at all colleges, universities, and other post-secondary schools, at www.studentaid.gov any time on or after October 1. For students attending these schools next year, they will need to provide both parent and student information from their 2021 federal tax return. This application then creates an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number that is used to determine the amount of student aid for which the student is eligible.

To assist area families with this application, Tarkio Tech and ICAN will be hosting a “Fill-Out-The-FAFSA” night at Thompson Learning Center on the Tarkio College campus. Families may sign up for the seminar on one of two evenings. The first class will be on Tuesday, October 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The second class will be on Tuesday, October 18, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Participants will need to register in advance and will need to bring a laptop computer and a copy of their 2021 Federal Income Tax return. There is no cost for the program, but spaces are limited, so make your reservation as soon as possible.
