The Rock Port Blue Jays hosted the South Holt Knights Friday, October 14, for the final home game of the season. Rock Port seniors who participated in football, cross country, band, and golf were recognized.

The Blue Jays and Knights were pretty evenly matched coming into this contest. The anticipation had been building all week.

Senior Aidan Burke got things going to start the game with a 40 yard return to give the Jays the ball on the Knights’ 14 yard line. In the second play of the game senior Phillip Herron would take it 10 yards for the first touchdown. The two point conversion was no good. Defensively, the Jays would hold South Holt to one touchdown in the first half. Senior Micah Makings would help get the lead back for Rock Port as he took the hand-off from Burke for a 15 yard touchdown. Makings’ two point conversion was good giving the Jays a 14-8 lead at halftime.

Following halftime the Jays would add 16 points to their lead. The first touchdown came off of a muffed snap by punter Micah Makings, who would throw a pass and connect with Phillip Herron who took it 68 yards. The second was following a big defensive hold on a fourth and long to give the Jays good field position. Four plays later Makings would dive off left tackle for the final score for Rock Port, making the score 30-8.

The game seemed to be in hand, but to show how fast things can turn, the Knights took advantage of a short field to make the score 30 to 16. This was followed by an onside kick which was recovered by the Knights. Five plays later South Holt scored and made the score 30 to 22. Following a defensive stand the Knights would get the ball on their own 25 yard line, and just like that they went nine plays and scored to make the score 30-28. The two point conversion was no good for the tie and Rock Port would hang on for the win.

The Jays travel to Mound City on Friday, October 21, at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Panthers for the final regular season game.
