November 21, 1947

• Loraine Heckel has purchased from Walter Mercer the latter’s business house on South Main Street in which Mr. Mercer has been conducting a used car business. Report has it that Heckel will establish a produce business in his new holdings.

• Charles Baldwin of Kansas City, son of Mrs. Minnie Baldwin, left Kansas City for a position he will have with the Metcalf-Hamilton Kansas City Bridge Co. at Harmon Field, Stephenville, Newfoundland.

• The Rock Port Municipal Telephone Company, which for a while had planned a new building to replace the present quarters, has dropped the idea and is starting work on two additions to the present building.

• About everything that could happen to a ball team to cause them to lose a football game happened to the Blue Jays Tuesday night in St. Joseph when they lost 12-27 in a carry-over game that was scheduled for the previous Friday night. Besides the bad weather that had moved the game day, some of the Rock Port team members have had a recent touch of the “flu” and Donnie King, their best defense man, went out of the game early in the second quarter with a head injury.

• Main Street was disturbed about nine Saturday night when a blast occurred at the Rock Port Cleaning Co. pantorium, injuring the proprietor, Angus Mullins, and blowing out one of the large plate-glass windows in the front of the building.

November 16, 1972

• Atchison County’s bumper crop was dealt a heavy blow by the week’s early snow storm. What apparently was the best overall crop in history may be considerably less than that before it gets in the bin.

• Joe McElfish, one of Atchison County’s most noted coin and stamp collectors, has been busy the past few months since his retirement from the Army Corps of Engineers, with a display case in the Bank of Atchison County. Joe has coins and stamps from all over the world, most of which are locked safely away in bank deposit boxes.

• Extradition was waived by Darryl Allen, 22, a Tarkio College student, charged with the murder of Sharon Louise Barnett, 21, of Tarkio, and he is now residing in the Clarinda, Iowa, jail facilities. Since the murder charge is a capital offense, no bond will be set or allowed.

• Atchison County Sheriff Paul Seymour suffered a heart attack November 14 while shoveling snow at his home in Tarkio. He was taken directly to the hospital by his son where he remains in the intensive care heart unit.

• Specialist 4 Janet E. Flanagan, member of the Women’s Army Corps, was recently cited with a Certificate of Achievement for efficiency on the job while working in the military pay section of the Aberdeen Proving Ground finance and accounting office. She has since been transferred to the finance and accounting office at Camp Zama, Japan, and reported for duty there November 5.

• A once in a lifetime sight for many became a dream come true for one young local hunter. Dave Meyerkorth saw two bucks fighting, but then realized that their antlers were locked and one had already died and was in water with the other unsuccessfully trying to free itself. Dave’s son, Adam, got out his bow and harvested the buck. One buck was 13 points and the other 12.

• The Board of Public Works board members, employees, Board of Aldermen and staff were on hand for the ribbon cutting to mark the opening of the new sewer system in Rock Port.

• A check was made to the 8&40 Salon #816 for participation in the Save a Label Program. The American Legion Auxiliary saved 3,000 Shurfine UPC labels and earned $90.
