• “A student asked a teacher: ‘Teacher, what do you think of cheating?’ The teacher replied, ‘If you can cheat and live with yourself, that’s your business.’ Next day, report cards were sent home. Upon returning to school, the gangling youth said, ‘Teacher, I find that I can cheat and live with myself much better than I can fail and live with my mother.’”
• The first payment of $15 was recently sent for the support of a European child which the high school students have adopted. More than enough money was given by the students during the first month and this surplus will be used for the child’s support during the summer months.
• The football boys were recent guests of the Paramount Theatre at a free show, “The Long Night,” courtesy of the management.
• An attendance of some 500 fathers and sons enjoyed at last Friday evening’s annual Father and Son banquet at Rock Port School. Local Cub Scouts contributed two features including a style revue in which the youngsters modeled women’s dress and got a lot of laughs, not the least of which came when a scantily attired bathing “girl” planted a resounding kiss on Skipper Cribbs’ head.

• Pictured in Citizens of Tomorrow (a special feature of local children) are 3-month-old twins Anthony Louis and Nicole Renee Bell, children of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bell of Tarkio. The babies’ favorite toys are teddy bears and rattles and they enjoy eating peaches and ice cream.
• The Cub Scouts of Pack 59 had a fun night at the Tarkio College indoor swimming pool November 8 with 17 Cubs and 10 Webelos attending. Jodi Maheu went along as lifeguard.
• Like the Guinness Book of World Records, Rock Port students hold their own certain records: Tony (the Tiger) Grossman has done approximately 50 push-ups in P.E.; the prune eating record is still held by Jerry Lutz with the consumption of 145 prunes; and RPHS students have received more new cars than elsewhere…
• Did you know that our Rock Port students devour a whopping 816 cartons of milk each day? That’s 65,280 calories or equal to more than 18 pounds of fat each day.
• A reception honoring the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Long of Rock Port will be held November 26.
• Work is progressing on clearing off the old Guilliams Cemetery north of Craig. All the stones have been listed. Many are buried without stones and family histories of those buried there are now being investigated. Donations to date total $234.
November 20, 1997
• After putting 241.25 miles behind them, the Rock Port Cross Country Team ended their season full of pride. Not only did they go the distance in miles, three of them went all the way to State.
• Six Nebraska Wesleyan University students won or placed in their divisions at the annual National Association of Teachers of Singing regional competition held November 7 and 8 in Wichita, Kansas. Three Wesleyan students placed in the senior male division. Rock Port’s James Schaffner placed first.
• The Nebraska Public Power District has honored Rock Port’s Charles Zabel for 25 years of service. Zabel has been a pipefitter-welder since 1972 at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville.
• “A nickel goes a long way lately – you can carry it around for days before you find something it will buy.”
• The total deer harvest for Atchison County was 756 during opening weekend. That is up 217 from 1996 totals. There were no accidents reported for our region and only three nonfatal accidents reported statewide.
