An upcoming hay school from University of Missouri Extension for forage and livestock producers will address topics on improved hay production, management, and feeding.

“This is a great time of year to talk about hay production,” says Amie Schleicher, MU Extension field specialist in livestock. “We’ll be feeding hay soon, if not already. Topics on hay quality, nutritional value, and feeding will be very timely.” Wayne Flanary, MU Extension field specialist in agronomy and part of the program planning, adds, “There’s a lot to discuss on the agronomic side of things in preparation for the upcoming growing season.”

The program will be held over the course of two evenings, Monday, December 12, and Monday, December 19, lasting from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each evening at the Weston Orchard and Vineyard, 18545 County Road H, Weston, Missouri.

The first evening will cover forage quality, as well as anti-quality factors and toxicity issues, forages for northwest Missouri, meeting the nutritional needs of beef cattle with forages, hay fertility, and pest management.

Evening two will include discussion on how to test hay and how to understand and use the results, storage, feeding management, efficiency, delivery, harvest systems, and economics.
