• Grade school and high school students may now swim in the Tarkio College swimming pool. The pool will be supervised and a charge of 10 cents per swim will be made.
• Harold Mertz will soon move to Tarkio where he has accepted a position as manager of the Tarkio Lumber Company. Mertz graduated from Tarkio College in 1933.
• President M. Earle Collins of Tarkio College announced the appointment of Mr. Arthur M. Humphreys of George Peabody College, Nashville, Tennessee, as professor of voice in the department of music. Professor Humphreys will succeed Madam Viglianetti, whose death this past fall terminated 10 years of service at Tarkio College.
• The Tarkio High School Indians defeated the Rock Port Blue Jays 45-17 on the local court. They will now face one of the strongest teams of southwest Iowa, Glenwood, coached by A.C. “Crook” Nuckolls, a Tarkio College graduate.
• Mrs. Merrill Barnes, the former Miss Charlene Barnes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barnes of Tarkio, will model an evening gown from a revolving stage lighted by 600 candles at the Violins Over Broadway show at Billy Rose’s Diamond Horse Show night club in New York City.
• Evans Drug Store has installed two new Rad-i-Air Conditioning units (germicidal lamps). With the use of these lamps, the air in a room is subjected to constant ultraviolet radiation for the radiant destruction of airborne bacteria.
January 18, 1973
• New officers were elected at the last Chamber of Commerce meeting. They are: president, Dr. David Kyle; first vice-president, Dale Livengood; second vice-president, Bill Munn; secretary, Larry Freeman; and treasurer, W. R. Vietze.
• A high temp of 53 degrees on the 16th disposed of most of the snow and ice accumulation this week after a low of minus 10 was recorded on the 10th.
• Three Tarkio College runners were chosen to participate in the Doane Invitational Indoor Track Meet January 13 at Crete, Nebraska. Bruce Barnett of Tarkio won the 60 yard high hurdles and will compete in the N.A.I.A. nationals. Walt Knox took third in the 60 yard dash and will also be heading to nationals. His time of 1:15.8 established a new Tarkio College record. The Owls’ indoor track program includes 30 athletes who are coached by Robert Tucker.
• Eighteen new Brownies were invested Tuesday afternoon to join 11 second year members of Troop 151 under the leadership of Mrs. Harry Blewitt, Mrs. Tom Struble, Mrs. Bill Fox, and Mrs. Jack Davis.

• Tarkio Elementary students were visited by Larry and Vince, the Crash Dummies, and the Buckle-up Beaver to speak about the importance of buckling safety belts in automobiles.
• Kristi McEnaney has taken over the top spot of the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce for 1998, serving as president. Other officers include: vice-president, Will Johnson; treasurer, Don Jagger; and secretary, Anne Amthor.
• Colby William Linthicum, born to Malisa (Groff) and Chuck Linthicum of Tarkio, was the first baby born in the new year at Community Hospital Association in Fairfax. Colby was born January 2.
