January 16, 1948

• E.W. Craven of Marysville, Kansas, has purchased the business, stock, and building of the Fairfax Truck & Tractor company from H. Burte Gomel. The business will be conducted under the name of the Craven Implement Company. Mr. Craven operates International Harvester stores and service departments in three other locations.

• Junior Simmons, George Prime, J.R. Scarlett, and Jimmie Sly all have their discharges from the Navy and are back home again. These boys, together with Dean Ray and Harold K. Townsend, all entered the service about the same time two years ago and all are home except Townsend. They’ve seen a lot of the world, but are glad to get back in civilian life again.

• Heirs of George L. Carter will sell 288 acres of the Carter land, located some 10 or 12 miles east and south of Fairfax, at public auction at the front door of the Exchange Bank of Fairfax Tuesday, January 27. One tract of 171 acres is well improved with a nine-room house, large barn, and other buildings. A 40-acre tract is also improved and there is a 37-acre tract containing 17 acres of timber.

• Walter A. Smith is advertising a public sale of cattle, horses, and general farm equipment to be held six and one-half miles southwest of Fairfax on what is known as the old Freiling farm. The sale will be held Monday, January 19.

January 18, 1973

• Mr. and Mrs. James Snider of Craig have leased the Truck Stop Cafe from Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith and plan to open soon. They have been painting and decorating the interior and plan to improve the drives and make additional parking spaces for patrons.

• The heaviest single piece of equipment in the new Exchange Bank of Fairfax building, a vault door weighing 5,200 pounds, was moved into place last week. Laying of the brick flooring and other construction processes were delayed until the door was delivered.

• A 24-foot addition has recently been constructed at MFA Fertilizer Bulk plant in Fairfax. Two bays with capacity of 150 tons each are housed in the addition and a new four-ton mixer is being installed. New unloading facilities have also been added.

• Mr. and Mrs. Beuford Stoner and Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Stoner left over the weekend for a trip to Phoenix, Arizona, and California. Mrs. Dolores Wake accompanied them to Phoenix where she will visit with her sister, Mrs. Lester Kennedy.

January 15, 1998

• The body of James “Elrod” Hendrix of Fairfax was found early Saturday morning, January 10, after his car apparently crossed a rural highway and came to rest on the guard rail. A paper carrier discovered the scene at 4:00 a.m. on Route J just west of Fairfax at the bridge.

• Atchison County has something to be extra proud of this year with Pam Davis, RN, MSN, FNP graduate completing her Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner and remaining in her native surroundings to fulfill some of her longtime dreams of specializing in the nursing field. She will be working with Dr. Hrabik and staff at Tarkio Family Practice Center.
