January 30, 1948

• Hardin Cox, who has been serving with the US Army in Japan for almost a year, arrived home early Thursday morning of this week. His service overseas included being a member of one of the armed forces football teams in Japan last fall and he took part in several games.

• Mearl Lytle of High Creek community was the successful bidder for the Opp farm of approximately 80 acres at $210 an acre. Mr. Lytle gets possession March 1st.

• Clark A. McColl of Westboro, who has been serving as state senator from Missouri’s old First District, has filed for re-election to the office.

• Jack Hudson, who is making a name for himself in dramatics at the University of Kansas City, appeared in “Dear Ruth” at Olathe, Kansas, Wednesday of this week. His first leading lady was taken ill and after rehearsing four substitutes, a New York Rockette dancer was selected for the part.

• The Ritz Cafe has been sold to John Workman and Robert Sawyer, both of Maryville.

• Delmer Ellsworth Williams, former publisher of the Westboro Enterprise, died January 19 at his home in Ridgedale, Missouri. Mr. Williams sold his newspaper to The Mail some years ago.

January 25, 1973

• Apparently the extreme cold and below normal temperatures cooled the wedding fever some, as only five couples have wed so far in January, according to Atchison County Circuit Clerk and Recorder Albert Kelly.

• Clay Knierim launched a half court bomb with two seconds left in the overtime period to carry the Jays 60-58 over the North Nodaway Mustangs.

• Kimosabi column: “It snowed so hard this week, it snowed horses – well maybe Shetland ponies. One showed up on the reservation Monday morning.” “If you are going to have to hitchhike from St. Joseph to KC to pick up a friend’s car at KCI, you might just as well go first class and thumb a ride with Secretary of State James C. (Cash) Kirkpatrick, as Mrs. Annette Henry and her friend Mrs. Polly Dillard did Saturday.”

• Mr. and Mrs. John Knierim, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gebhards, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Graves, and Carl Barnhart returned January 21 from a trip to Orlando, Florida. They won this four-day trip by increased chemical and fertilizer volume sales for the Atchison County Co-op.

• Winter’s latest blast cost the City of Rock Port between $800 and $900 to remove snow from the city streets. The cost of snow removal so far this winter is now $1,515.

January 22, 1998

• Peter Batschelet currently holds the school record for the most consecutive free throws. The 6’3” Rock Port senior made his first 29 free throws of the year. He also holds the record for the best career and season free throw percentages.

• Rock Port Elementary kindergarten class, taught by Mrs. Farley and Mrs. Hughes, visited the Atchison County Mail January 20. The students are learning about the letter “N” and came to the office to learn about newspapers and negatives.

• Helen Jo Stevens was recognized last week for her 40 years of service to the Rock Port Board of Public Works.
