February 6, 1948
• Francis Barnett of near Westboro has purchased from Taylor Voorhees and sons the service station and residence just north of Tarkio on Highway 59. The Voorhees family moved Tuesday to their 4th and Pine street property which they purchased from Harold Logan.
• Troopers of the State Highway Patrol were called to investigate a traffic accident involving the death of a mule Sunday about 1:30 a.m. near Fairfax. The mule, on Highway 275 about three-quarters of a mile east of Fairfax, was struck by a car being driven by Perry Huffman of near Langdon.
• Some 250 farm leaders from all parts of Atchison County attended the 22nd annual Soils and Crops Conference in Rock Port January 27 to discuss soil improvement and cropping practices with their neighbors.
• A local mail carrier saved a stroke victim. Asa Drake of Tarkio suffered a stroke Tuesday night and was unable to move and was alone at his home until found by Guy Roberts, rural mail carrier, Wednesday morning. Mr. Roberts noticed that Mr. Drake’s mail had not been taken into the house and there were no foot tracks. After finding the front door locked, he went to the back door and heard Mr. Drake call from inside and found him on the floor.

• Featured C.O.E. student is Les Hogue, who is employed at the Market Basket under the supervision of Mr. Everett Strautman.
• The 13th snow storm struck Wednesday with an early accumulation of three inches with more falling and blowing. Then the melting snow the past week brought rivers and streams to full or overflowing and mud has become a major problem.
• A total of 111 new 6700 lumen mercury vapor street lights were installed in the residential district of Tarkio to replace the old style incandescent lights. This will nearly triple the lighting in most areas and three more street lights are to be installed at the airport, north 7th, and in the Northview addition.
• The 1973 Tarkio High School basketball homecoming king and queen are Mr. Curt Brought and Miss Denise Davidson. They were crowned following the games with Craig last Friday night.
February 5, 1998
• Tarkio’s Business and Professional Women’s Club met Thursday, January 22. Twelve members and one guest enjoyed a soup supper, with soups made by Karen Clark. New officers installed were: Darlene Hogue, president; Margie Culver, 1st vice-president; Sharon McCall, 2nd vice-president; Sharon Hogue, secretary; and Karen Clark, treasurer.
• The P.E.O. Chapter FF donated over $500 to the Tarkio/Westboro Ministerial Alliance to help with their ongoing work with those in need.
• Tarkio High School will celebrate its basketball homecoming Friday, February 13. King and queen candidates are Adam Heard, Shaun Defenbaugh, Mike Quimby, Shannon Knierim, Rebekah Koch, and Ann Hurst.
• There is a new deputy in town! Her name is Gretchen and she is nearing three years old. Gretchen is a Dutch Shepherd brought to the United States and trained by Brehlsford K-9 Academy for narcotic odor detection and tracking. Gretchen’s handler is Deputy T.W. Beattie.
