• Mr. and Mrs. Orville Schoonover have sold their beauty business – building and inventory – to Miss Evelyn Johnston of Rock Port. For the past 19 years, the Schoonovers have successfully operated a fine beauty business. They plan to set up residence in New Mexico or Arizona in the hopes that the climate will benefit Mr. Schoonover’s health.
• Large crowds enjoyed John Deere Day last Friday thanks to the Atchison County Implement Company in Tarkio. Farmers responded about 500 strong to the invitation to a free movie at the Tarkio Theatre. They also saw demonstrations of sprays and farm equipment at the store.
• “It isn’t often that one is able to preach on his birthday,” said Dr. J. A. Thompson, beloved president emeritus of Tarkio College, but that was his rare privilege Sunday morning, February 8, on the occasion of his 88th birthday.
February 15, 1973
• Mrs. Olga Sons and Mrs. Marion Brooks will act as General Co-chairmen for the annual Tarkio Community Betterment Awards Banquet to be held March 27. Along with the tradition Citizen and Employee of the Year will be a Farm Family of the Year, recognizing the importance of agri-business to this area and of the important part the farm family fills as part of the community.
• Pastor Kenneth Ellingson will be the speaker for a week of renewal at the St. John’s Lutheran Church beginning Sunday, February 18.
• Tarkio College has received the approval of the Missouri Board of Nursing Home Administrators to offer a second course entitled Social Gerontology II this winter semester, February 5 to May 11. The course is open to people of area communities because of the importance of our understanding of the processes of aging and the large proportion of those over 65 in the area.
• Ray Hildebrand, Associate Director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Program Division, will present a program of contemporary folk music February 21 at the Mule Barn in Tarkio. Mr. Hildrebrand has fast become a nationally-known entertainer. His 1963 written and recorded song “Hey Paula” became the number one song in the country and sold well over three million copies.
• Wednesday night, the Tarkio Fire Department had a reorganization meeting. The department now has a Board of Directors as well as the fire chief and his two assistant chiefs. The fire department is in need of three able-bodied men between the ages of 21 and 45.

• Fairfax High School hosted the annual Atchison County Band Day on February 4. Over 100 students participated. The guest conductor was Mr. Gene Edwards, who is the conductor of the Polo, Missouri, High School band. His performing career has allowed him to perform under the baton of Lt. Col. Charles P. Erwin, USMC, and Merle Evans, Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus Band.
• Kindra Wolfe and Ashley Million were the elementary winners of the Jump Rope for Heart contest. Kindra won first and Ashley second. Both girls won stereo/cassette players.
• Tarkio students who will be competing in the Atchison County Spelling Bee in Rock Port February 12 are Jason Sundermann, Shannon Riley, Bryan Amthor, and Jake Harbin.
