February 20, 1948
• A meeting will be held at the Walnut Inn Cafe in Tarkio Monday evening, February 23, at which a respirator, to be used in the treatment of infantile paralysis, will be demonstrated.
• Much of the excavation work for the Fairfax Community Hospital has been done, including the excavation to the street level of about 40 feet on the north side of the lot. Dirt removed has been used to fill low places around the new Community Feed & Grain company’s elevator and other places in the city.
• Glade Bilby visited with his brother, George, and family Monday and left that night for Washington, D.C., to report for duty. Glade has reenlisted in the Army Air Forces with the commission of lieutenant colonel. He is to be a senior fighter instructor and will have an office in the Pentagon building.
February 22, 1973
• Class for the adult shop will start Thursday, February 22, at the vocational ag building for those interested in woodworking, acetylene, electric welding or small gasoline engine repairs.
• Atchison County students in 6th-8th grades were winners in a public speaking demonstration held in Tarkio February 15. Curt Schleiser, Joan Espey, Dale Herrman, and Sherry Ball of Tarkio, Rodney Clark, Nathan Schafner, and Julie Walters of Rock Port, and Jim Ball of Fairfax were the winners.
• Following Friday night’s basketball game, homecoming king and queen were announced and crowning ceremonies held. Jim Davis was crowned king and Debbie O’Riley was crowned queen. A student dance followed the festivities.
• Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Boyer of Ava, Missouri, have moved to Fairfax and are operating Rogers Cafe.
• Jim McClanahan, engineer for Larkin Associates, met with the Fairfax City Council Wednesday evening to discuss plans and estimates for a new city water system, including a treatment plant. Tests have been drilled to locate a new water source and two are reported to be capable of producing 200 gallons per minute. These were located just west of present wells.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “The Fairfax Market is up for sale. Mr. Jackson is an excellent meat man and people came from miles around just to buy from him. The store has been on the corner and a mainstay for this community for 85 years. Fairfax needs a grocery store.” “Thought for the day . . . ‘Oh to have the gift to think for ourselves as we can think for others.’”
• Fairfax students participated in the Lost at Sea workshop, sponsored by ACCESS 2000, on February 6 at NWMSU. The day-long workshop featured decision-making activities about how they would survive lost at sea. Students participating included Bryan Adams, Miles Smith, Janah Heits, Rachel Burke, Jamie Whittington, Ashley Grossman, Megan O’Riley, and Briana Umbarger.
• The new methamphetamine hotline number has received numerous calls since being activated. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that of 67 calls from February 2 to 9, 56 resulted in reports now being investigated.
• The local flower shop was busy blowing up balloons, sacking candy, and preparing flowers for Valentine’s Day. They called on extra helpers to deliver and the young men were dressed in tux jackets, shirts, and ties and said “Happy Valentine’s Day” when greeted at the doors. Making deliveries were Harry Combs, Craig Vance, and Jason Kemerling.
