Phyllis Colleen Rhoades was born October 2, 1928, in Rock Port, Missouri, one of 11 children born to Orval Franklin and Theresa (Smith) Chastain. She attended Red Star and High Creek Country Schools.
On February 12, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to Vernie Amos Rhoades in Hiawatha, Kansas. They lived in Nishnabotna, Missouri, and became the parents of six children, Jimmy, Vernon, Teri, Judy, David, and Joseph. In 1992, they moved to Fairfax, Missouri, where she lived until the present time.
Phyllis was a homemaker, raising her children and grandson, Joseph Lee. She was then employed by Lena Groff at the Sale Barn for 10 years. Phyllis later was a cook for Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri.
Phyllis was a member of the Fairfax Christian Church, Fairfax, receiving Jesus as her Lord and Savior in 1992. Phyllis passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Fairfax, at the age of 94.
Besides her parents and husband, Vernie Rhoades, Phyllis was preceded in death by sons, Jimmy Dale and Vernon Rhoades; infant son, Joseph Allan Rhoades; granddaughter, Tracy Lynn Rhoades; great-granddaughter, Ashley Ann Wooten; and siblings, Orval, Harold, Eugene, Carrol, Allen, and Jimmie Chastain, Faye Morrison, Rose Ann Chastain, Esther Lingerfelt, and Gladys Harmon. Survivors include children, Teri (Wayne) Laverentz, Tabor, Iowa, Judy Ann (Larry, Jr.) Wooten, Hopkins, Missouri, and David Lee (Elizabeth) Rhoades, Fairfax; daughter-in-law, Debbie Rhoades, Fairfax; special grandson, Joseph Lee Rhoades; grandchildren, Larry Dale, Sherry Ann, John Daniel, Amy Colleen, Sandra Michelle, Stevie Joe, and Dusty Rhoades; great-grandchildren, Ashley Ann, Alicia Marie, April Lynn and Amber Dawn Clark, Corey and Zakary Stevens, Emily Marie Stevens, and Hunter and River Rhoades; great-great-grandchildren, Charlie and Cammie White; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. There is no visitation. Interment will be at Smith Cemetery, Rock Port.
