• Bette Jane Bolin and Betty Lou Lucas went to St. Joseph last Thursday to try out for the Goetz Girls’ Basketball Team. Both were accepted for the team for the next season, which starts in August.
• Mr. and Mrs. Keith Hurst and Miss Marjorie Hawkins will attend the Harvest of the Stars program at the Music Hall in Kansas City Sunday when James Melton, Metropolitan opera star, is soloist.
• Jerald Frederic, well-known pianist of exceptional ability, will appear in a concert at David Rankin Hall Monday, March 8. The Chicago, Illinois, artist is well-known in colleges and universities where he has had wide appeal.
• J.C. Penney of the J.C. Penney stores has accepted the invitation of the senior class of Tarkio High School to be the speaker at their graduation exercises in May.

• The drama class has been studying what goes into producing a play. They’ve been learning about stage makeup, the director, stage manager, costume designer, prompt master, and the business manager. The class will apply the skills they learned when they help with the upcoming junior play.
• God’s Hellfighter, evangelist Joe Murray, will conduct a Crusade for Christ in Tarkio next week at the First Baptist Church.
• Work is progressing rapidly on the new elementary building addition at the Tarkio R-I School. The bricklayers have nearly completed the outside frame of the elementary addition and will move to the junior high addition this week.
• Mather and Levings Construction Company from Shenandoah, Iowa, and Tarkio, Missouri, submitted the low bid for the Blockton Watershed Project. Their bid was $131,302. The Blockton Watershed is 18,720 acres in size and is located west of Blockton, Iowa, and drains into the Platte River.
• The Tarkio High School French class is studying “Doctor In Spite of Himself” by Moliere (Poquelin) in preparation for their trip to see the play in Kansas City March 11. The play is presented entirely in French by a cast from the famous Comedie Francaise of Paris. This is the fourth such trip sponsored by Mrs. Crapson.

• Jeanie Hannah of Tarkio has recently received word that two of her submissions have been chosen as finalists for a country songwriters’ contest conducted by the Association of Songwriters and Lyricists, a division of United Recording Artists’ Network in Los Angeles, California. Jeanie’s entries are entitled “The Call of the Rodeo” and “The Cowboy and Cowgirl.”
• Captain Maureen E. Ryan of Tarkio recently graduated from the Combined Arms and Services Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. After spending leave with her parents, Maurice and Mary Ryan in Tarkio, CPT Ryan will be returning to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a Support Operations Officer in support of the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division, deployed in support of Operation Joint Guard.
• Cathy M. Farley, a sophomore at Tarkio High School, was one of five Missouri students to win a one week, expense-paid educational trip to Washington, D.C., to study government. She is one of the top prize winners of the Bill of Rights Quiz Contest.
• A new awning has been put up at Sharlyn’s Beauty Den on Main Street in Tarkio. The awning was made and installed by Harold VanderPlaats of J & J Products in Tarkio.
