March 5, 1948

• The new garage of E. R. Burke was gutted by a fire. Mr. Burke’s Chevrolet car was burned and other tools, articles, and a new Fordson plow stored in the building were either damaged or destroyed in a fire of mysterious origin about eight o’clock Thursday morning of last week. It is thought that defective wiring or a short in the car may have caused the fire.

• A new oil burning furnace is being installed in the Fairfax Christian Church and other repairs are being made to the building.

• The DeLong Heating & Plumbing firm now has on its floor and on display a complete line of summer and winter air conditioning units. According to George DeLong, this is the first complete line of this equipment that has been shown in this section of the state.

• Dirt roads in this section are reported to be in the worst condition in years, with many almost impassible. Rural carriers and school bus drivers have had to skip much of their routes and farmers who live on dirt roads are leaving their cars and trucks on the highways.

March 8, 1973

• David Cooper left Monday with a tour group and will visit Spain and Portugal during the trip.

• A local team of girls played their first basketball game Tuesday against the Tarkio College girls’ team at the college. The Fairfax girls won 32-31. The team, coached by Bob Myers of Tarkio, includes his wife, Jany, and Belinda Musch, Jennifer Bargman, Karen Roop, Karen Simmons, and Suzanne Southard.

• S. Floyd Williams donated a flag and flagpole to the Community Hospital in Fairfax. Mr. Williams, who has been a patient several days, leaves today for surgery at Methodist Hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri.

• Beautiful, marvelous, and unbelievable were just some of the adjectives used by more than 1,200 who visited the new Exchange Bank of Fairfax Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

• Monday evening, March 12, will be the closing night of the adult farm meetings being held at the Elkdale community building. The speaker will be Dean Farley of TPC in Tarkio. His topic will be “Feed additives for cattle and hog feeds with emphasis on withdrawal periods.”

March 5, 1998

• Vernon and Eva (Thompson) Trauernicht will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary March 17. They were married by Pastor T.O. Rorie in Rock Port, Missouri. The Trauernichts have lived all of their married lives east of Fairfax engaged in farming and raising livestock. They are now retired.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “Well, the sign of the time has struck in Fairfax. There will no longer be hospital admissions or dismissals published in the weekly newspaper. There are people out there that take advantage of sick folks and they could be getting their information from the paper. If you want a birth announcement to run in the newspaper, you will have to turn that in yourself as well.” “Thought for the day… ‘You get the best out of others when you give the best of yourself.”

• John Gilbert, a 10-year-old Fairfax resident, has once again progressed to walking on his own with the support of braces and a walker thanks to his determination and excellent physical therapy. Diagnosed with paraplegia in May of 1996, he has no active muscle function in the lower extremities due to a spinal cord injury and tumor in the thoracic spine.
