Nina Sue Heits, the daughter of James Wesley and Mary Frances (Nauman) Krusor, was born July 26, 1936, in Rock Port, Missouri. Sue attended Rock Port High School, Rock Port, graduating in 1954. For a short time, she was employed in the Atchison County Assessor’s Office, Rock Port.
On June 26, 1955, Sue was united in marriage to John Carl “J.C.” Heits at the Rock Port Baptist Church by Rev. Swadley. They became the parents of six children, Craig, Michele, Marissa, Shawna, Shane, and John. The couple lived and farmed near Craig, Corning, and Fairfax, Missouri, until J.C.’s retirement in 1995. Sue and J.C. spent 52 wonderful years together before J.C. passed away on August 19, 2007.
Sue was a farm wife and homemaker, raising and caring for her children. She also worked part-time as a bank courier.
Sue was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Corning, and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mound City, Missouri. She was active in Ladies Guild, LWML, and was a member of the Story Hardin American Legion Auxiliary Post #164, Craig. She taught Bible School, Sunday School, and Catechism class. Sue enjoyed cooking, making donuts for the Church Bazaar and Blue Jay Relays and sewing. Most of all, Sue enjoyed spending time with her family and supporting her children and grandchildren. Sue passed away Monday, February 27, 2023, in St. Joseph, Missouri, at the age of 86.
Besides her parents and husband, J.C. Heits, Sue was preceded in death by grandson, Timothy Roach; brothers, James Harold and Kenton (Rita) Krusor; daughter-in-law, Anne Heits; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Melva (Monte) Schaufler, Ramona (Donald) Phillips, Harold Vernon, Shirley (Herbert) Quealy, Richard Heits, and Bernie Heits; and nephew, Brian Krusor. Survivors include sons, Craig (Louanne) Heits, Fairfax, Shane Heits and John Heits, both of Fairfax; daughters, Michele (David) Roach, Kirkville, Iowa, Marissa (R.D.) Steele, St. Joseph, and Shawna (James) Dampier, Weaubleau, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Shirley Bussard, Tarkio, and Sue Heits, Rock Port; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Friday, March 3, 2023, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Mound City, conducted by Rev. Eamonn Ferguson. Interment was at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Craig.
