• Luther C. Hedrick passed away March 10 at the age of 83 years, one month, and 19 days. The first 30 years of life were spent on his father’s farm, two miles west of Fairfax. After farming in Homestead, Oklahoma, and marrying Grace M. Babb in 1898, the couple and their children moved back to a farm near Fairfax.
• Mr. and Mrs. Al Minshall, who have operated the Donut Shop since early in January, closed the place Saturday and moved the stock and equipment to Falls City, Nebraska, from where they came.
• Everett Crawford has purchased the residence property of Douglas Wells in the east part of Skidmore and expects to move to it to make his home as soon as the school term here closes.
March 22, 1973
• Gary Smith and Danny Kemerling attended a three-day seminar in Kansas City. They were given lectures and demonstrations with special attention to hair coloring, reconditioning, and other modern methods of hair styling for men.
• Robert Gaines, N.D. Green and Herschel Stoner attended an Electrical Supply Trade Show at the American Royal building in Kansas City Tuesday evening. As wholesalers, they were guests of their suppliers and transported by bus from St. Joseph.
• From the descriptive names selected by competing basketball teams in the Community Club benefit Saturday evening, it sounds as if fans were in for a hilarious evening of entertainment. Charley Horses vs. Aches and Pains are the women’s teams and the men are the Double Dribblers and Fat Five.

• The Fairfax fifth graders wanted to help a student in Maitland named Steven Cureton who has acute lymphatic leukemia. The students at Fairfax raised $405.28 for Steven from a bake sale and donations.
• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines: “I want to thank the sons of teacher, Phyllis Parker, for helping me shovel snow. I tried to pay them but Phyllis said no, that they were just helping people.” “Thought for the day… ‘Religion is a daily bread, not cake for special occasions.’”
• Mr. and Mrs. Audie Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Audley Jackson sold the Fairfax Market to Roger and Lou Ann Pennel of Fairfax. Last Thursday, trucks arrived with grocery stock for the store. Friends and employees pitched in to price and stock the shelves. The name of the store will be R & L Grocery. The Pennels also own the R & L Feed and Farm business in Fairfax.
• Award-winning author June Rae Wood will be visiting Fairfax Elementary March 23. She will be giving presentations and autographing books. Ms. Wood is a native of Versailles, Missouri, and wrote “The Man Who Loved Clowns,” which was inspired by her brother, Richard, who was born with Down’s Syndrome. Other books of hers include “When Pigs Fly,” “A Share of Freedom,” and “Turtle on a Fence Post.”
• The annual Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby was held in Fairfax Sunday afternoon. Tyson Miller was the overall champion. His car crossed the finish line ahead of Michael Kerr’s and Orry Paris’, winners of the Tiger Cubs and Webelos divisions.
