March 26, 1948

• The Band Mother’s Club have used the $271 collected at a band concert to purchase a sousaphone for the use of the high school band. They have also redecorated the stage at the high school auditorium.

• The town band had its first rehearsal Monday night. All who have instruments are invited to play. Band members are trying to arrange reservations for April 18 to go to St. Joseph to hear the Naval band.

• The Bilby Brothers have issued a warning to the public. They now have Brahma bulls used in the 4-State Roundup in one of the pens on the rodeo grounds and warn everyone to not go near them.

• Trapped by a fire of undetermined origin in their home at midnight Sunday night, Mr. and Mrs. Ray C. Whitford made a call to the fire department and then with help from others, escaped their upstairs bedroom by use of a ladder. Although the fire was put out before the home was destroyed, much was lost or damaged in the lower rooms.

• Voters in the Daleview consolidated district will vote on a proposition at the regular school election April 6 to close the district’s five rural schools and transport the pupils to the central school building. This building has not been used for school purposes since the high school was closed several years ago.

March 29, 1973

• The FHA girls enjoyed their annual spring trip to St. Joseph Saturday, March 24. They went to the Sirloin Stockade for dinner, Albrecht Art Gallery, and the Hillcrest 4 Theatres where they saw “The Poseidon Adventure.”

• Funeral services will be held Friday at Price Funeral Chapel in Maryville for Clinton Allen, 77-year-old retired monument dealer. Allen was preceded in death by a twin brother, Clayton Allen, who was a long-time resident of Atchison County and well-known here.

• Fairfax Community Club cleared $300 from its basketball event and food stand Saturday evening. The women’s game was won by Aches and Pains in a sudden-death play-off while a last minute shot gave the Double Dribblers a 38-37 victory over the Fat Five. The officials and score keepers were declared not entirely impartial, leaving the team’s abilities in doubt.

• Fairfax Community Betterment has chosen two major projects for awards competition: support of a new water system and construction of a permanent stage in the city park.

• The 4-H Carnival was climaxed Saturday evening, March 24, with the crowning of Barbara Bolton as queen and Glen Arnold as king. Both are members of the Fairfax Wolverine 4-H Club.

March 26, 1998

• Track season has begun at FHS with a record number of athletes out for the teams. This year, there are 18 males and 12 females participating. Coach Dickkut had to order more uniforms to outfit everyone.

• Over The Back Fence by Nancy Gaines – “The annual hospital benefit is going to be held this Saturday night. This is replacing the running events they had done in the past years at Big Lake State Park. The dinner will go from town to town and entertainment is promised to be good!”
