• Harold McCracken’s successor as manager of the Paramount Theatre is Perry Hutson, who came to Rock Port from Lawrence, Kansas.
• In connection with the visit of the Red Cross mobile blood unit, it has been told that Miss Lorna Brown of Tarkio, Bluford LaHue of Langdon, Mrs. Hada Breazile of Tarkio, and Herbert Townsend of Rock Port have all donated a gallon of blood each.
• A break in the dike immediately south of the log cabin on Highway No. 275 south of the Iowa line last week caused the flooding of hundreds of acres of land in northern Atchison County. The water stood some feet deep in buildings and on the land. Hundreds of automobiles were at the scene of the flooded area Sunday to take a look.
• The old R.P.L.&N. passenger coach on the railroad tracks used as headquarters for Rock Port’s Air Scout troop caught fire Monday morning. Damage to the interior of the coach also included materials and model planes.
• No less than a thousand people visited the formal opening of Chamberlain & Son’s greenhouse and studio last Saturday and Sunday. The visitors came from a wide territory to inspect the premises and the beautiful Memory Wedding Chapel and stock of Easter plants and flowers.
March 22, 1973
• A workshop meeting on collecting oral history will be held March 27 at the Farmers and Valley Bank in Tarkio. Oral history, the remembered events in the lives of local residents, is collected and stored on magnetic tape.
• Mr. and Mrs. David Shankel are the parents of a boy, Curtis Ray, born March 13. Curtis is not only welcomed by his parents and a sister, Candy, but 11 grandparents as well.
• Blue Jay Corner: The seniors are in the spotlight this week with the results of “The Most” contest. Some of the results include: Most Popular – Mark Cox and Shelly Shubat; Most Wit – Alan Eddy and Judi Polson; Most Athletic – Bob Stubblefield and Debbie Knierim; Most Outgoing – Bill Anders, David Frede, and Debbie Knierim; and Best Driver – Donald Zastrow and Teresa Miller.
• The first rocket launch of the Rock Port Organization of Amateur Rocketeers (ROAR) will be held Sunday, March 25, at the city park.
March 19, 1998
• The Atchison County Republican Women will meet Friday, March 27, at Trail Boss in Rock Port. Guests will be Bruce and Janice Graves of Tarkio, who will share their experiences as parents of two sons who have become involved with the political world: State Senator Sam Graves of Tarkio and Circuit Judge Todd Graves of Platte City.
• The Rock Port Community Garden Club was invited to the Greg Chamberlain home for lunch and their March 10 meeting. Betty Chamberlain shared about her trip to Europe, where she visited the Keukenhof Tulip Festival near Leiden in the Netherlands. There were eight million tulips, hyacinths, lilies and other flowering bulbs in full and glorious bloom.
• There are some locals trying to get on as extras in an upcoming Civil War movie. Old Plattsburg is to be made up as Lawrence, Kansas, and burned.
• William Wayne Whitford, born August 27, 1919, south of Fairfax at the farm home of his parents, passed away March 3, 1998. Wayne was a 30-year 4-H leader of the Wolverine 4-H Club. He was proud to have attended 59 of the past 60 Fairfax High School Alumni banquets.
• Beverly K. Jones received the Ferguson Prize at the Drake University Law School’s annual Supreme Court Day Banquet March 7 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Ferguson Prize is awarded to the law student who best exemplifies the commitment of the Drake Law School and has rendered outstanding assistance to the Law School Clinic or other public service projects.
