• Dr. Harold Vagtborg, noted scientist and president of the Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City, will be the guest at the Tarkio Rotary Club Tuesday, April 6. Dr. Vagtborg will also speak at the Tarkio College Chapel, lunch with the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce, and visit Atchison County farms.
• Back from central Europe and Africa, noted freelance adventurer and eye witness reporter Newton Bell will lecture at David Rankin Hall April 5 under the auspices of the Tarkio College Artist Course.
• Miss Laurella G. Dickson died at the age of 76 Monday, March 29. Laurella graduated from Tarkio College in 1896. For some 40 years, she served as an itinerating missionary to India.
April 5, 1973
• Although there are 420 students who are served at the Tarkio College cafeteria by Szabo Foods, only 97 students have signed up with the service for meatless meals to observe the meat boycott.
• Jeffrey Lockhart with Tarkio’s Pack 88 placed first in the Otoe District Pinewood Derby. Kevin Deckard with Rock Port’s Pack 59 placed third and Jay Fitzsimmons with Albany’s Pack 102 placed second.
• Attendance at the Mule Barn Theatre productions during the summer of 1972 reached 12,000.
• A Medal of Merit was awarded to First Class Scout Phil Meier. Phil, 13, saved his father, Robert Meier, when his father, a non-swimmer, fell off an uncompleted foot bridge into the water below. Phil jumped in fully clothed and grabbed his father and towed him to safety. The medal was presented March 31 in Maryville, Missouri, before a crowd of 2,000 people and more than 600 Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers. It is the first medal of this magnitude to be presented in the Pony Express Council in over 15 years.
• Frank Hopkins was presented a trophy, varsity letter, and a letterman’s jacket in recognition of his 99th birthday and his being named Tarkio College’s “Captain of the Century.” Hopkins is an 1896 graduate of Tarkio College and one of the college’s most prominent alumnus.

• The Tarkio Lions Club recognized its 30th anniversary with a celebration on Friday, March 27. Charter members were recognized: Bill Abell, Henry Balle, Jr., Ivan D. Carter, Philip R. Clark, John E. Currie, Carl Erdman, Larry G. Freeman, Samuel B. Graves, Larry Hicks, John C. Howell, Irvin Huffman, Dale Livengood, Charles L. McAdams, Steven G. McAdams, James Rinehart, Steven R. Rolf, Frank W. Schupp, Donald G. Schwenn, II, Ned Seymour, John Turnbull, Martin K. Volker, and William O. Yates.
• City Hall in Tarkio is getting a $22,000 facelift. The scope of the work includes brick masonry, power washing, tuck pointing damaged mortar joints, sealing movement cracks, and relay brick.
• Two candidates are vying for Tarkio Mayor. Charley Thomason is running against Vilas Jones, who is the current mayor.
