April 2, 1948

• Two southwest Atchison County brothers disappeared under the waters of the Missouri River near the former Aspinwall ferry landing in Benton township. The search for the bodies of Ed Noah, 58, and Ray Noah, 41, has thus far been unsuccessful.

• Mrs. Matt Thomas told a little story about the selling power of The Mail buyers’ column ads. She recently advertised a range for sale, which was seen by Miss Georgia Hedrick of Monterey, California. Miss Hedrick contacted her mother, Mrs. L. C. Hedrick of Fairfax, who wanted such a stove, and thus the purchase was made. The Mail sells them at long range or close by.

• George Opp is making extensive improvements in half a dozen of the guest rooms at Hotel Opp.

• A throng of 200 small boys and girls gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Bertram Sunday morning to get acquainted with the Easter Bunny and search for the 1,200 eggs put out for them.

• The body of Pvt. Ezra H. Hayes arrived April 2 at the port of New York. Pvt. Hayes was the son of Arthur H. Hayes of Rock Port.

• During the past three weeks, a single elimination free throw tournament was held in the gym for anyone in the school who wanted to participate. Nine faculty members and 55 students took part. Coach Whitford won the championship, hitting 24 of 25 free throws. Junior high’s Kym Haynes came in second hitting 22 of 25.

• Rock Port’s golf team is starting its second season, but this year there will be a new attraction, four girls. They will join nine boys to make up the team.

• Danny Hudson found 16 metal markers – placed at graves by the American Legion and other organizations – in a ditch on Brickyard Hill road northwest of Rock Port. Officers are now trying to locate the cemeteries that the markers were stolen from.

• The City of Watson has purchased a building from Rolf Farm Supply and plan to start construction in June. The new building is in conjunction with the West Atchison Fire Board and will have a community building on the south side and the fire station on the north side.

• A $1,550 per acre price tag was paid for 28 acres of land located west of the Interstate 29 and US Hwy. 136 interchange near Rock Port at an auction Monday at the courthouse steps. Mr. and Mrs. James Bermingham of Omaha, Nebraska, two-thirds owners of the property, were the successful bidders for a total of $43,400. According to information, they plan to put in a camper park in the area.

March 26, 1998

• Kari Sperber, along with the four other students from the Northwest Missouri State University Wesley Center, have decided to spend their spring break on a mission trip. They will go to Jonesville, Virginia, to participate in an Appalachian service project.

• Marvel Myers continues to enjoy providing a hairstyling business after 60 years. Marvel Sipes graduated from Caster’s Beauty Academy in St. Joseph, Missouri, March 23, 1938. She then opened a shop in her hometown of Westboro. She worked for Lillian Rolf in Rock Port for six years and then opened Marvel’s Beauty Shop September 9, 1948, in the basement of her home.

• The freshmen American Government class traveled to Maryville, Missouri, to participate in the National History Day competition at the district level. Advancing to state were Jessica Moran with her paper “Migrations of Fashions,” and Stefanie Dalrymple, Amy VanMeter, and Hallie Clodfelter with their project “The Movement of Women’s Rights – 150 years.”
