April 9, 1948
• Wednesday afternoon, the Tarkio Fire Department received its ninth call since the first of January and its fourth since last Saturday morning. The fire was a grass blaze on the vacant lot behind the J.M. Gerlash residence. The other calls included a fire in a waste basket at Squire Ice Cream company, a grass fire at the C.R. Carpenter residence on Chestnut Street, and a trash and used oil fire outside Obert’s Standard Station.
• Kenneth Woolsey of Tarkio has accepted an assistant professorship at Florida State University in Tallahassee. He taught mathematics this year at Tarkio High School and plans to be at the university this summer and the year following. He is a Tarkio College graduate.
• Strong winds were experienced here this past week with an average of 40 miles per hour with peaks to 55 miles per hour. The low temp registered for the period was 24.5 degrees on April 1 and the maximum was 79 degrees on April 4.
• About 100 people attended the Future Farmers of America Father and Son banquet at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Gross income this year from the FFA hog, cattle, sheep, corn, and chicken projects is expected to exceed $30,000.

• The Student Union Board of Tarkio College announces that Ted Koppel, ABC news correspondent, will give a lecture entitled “The End of the Vietnam War” on Tuesday, April 17, in Leitch Chapel on the Tarkio College campus.
• Eugene Southard arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Galen Southard of Tarkio, Monday, April 2, for a month of leave from the Air Force. He has been stationed almost three years in Greece.
• Steve Breazier, Mark Dalbey, and George Henry have been chosen as 1973 Outstanding College Athletes of America. This award is an honor given to the finest college athletes across the nation based on athletic ability, academic achievement, and citizenship.
• Roger Riley, 10, of Tarkio was the youngest contestant in the Midwest 8-Ball Pool Association, Inc. tournament in Omaha, Nebraska, April 8, at the Holiday Inn. He won one of his games in the big contest, but then was defeated. Roger gets lots of practice at his dad’s pool hall, Riley Recreation.

• David Merriett of Westboro, Missouri, has recently been named the new manager of Pizza Hut in Tarkio. David started working at Pizza Hut in Tarkio when he was 16 and still in high school.
• The Petro Card pumps are now open on the east edge of town near Martin Car Wash.
• The Nu Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, April 5, on the Tarkio Academy campus. Galadriel Gratton dressed up as the Easter Bunny.
• Alex Baruth, a sixth grade student at Tarkio Elementary, was chosen as the overall winner in the Soil & Water Conservation poster contest.
