• Through the Atchison County Council of Churches, efforts are being made to bring each Sunday evening a minister from one of the neighboring churches to provide a service for Phelps City and the surrounding territory.

• The Atchison County Tuberculosis Association is bringing a mobile chest X-ray outfit to Atchison County by means of which all high school and Tarkio College students may avail themselves of an examination free of charge (for the rest it is 75¢).

• A brooder house at the Jimmie Burke place just east of Greenhill Cemetery burned early Wednesday morning, together with about 50 six-week-old chicks. It is believed the fire started from the brooder stove.

• The Ralph Greer post of the American Legion will have a dance at the Memorial Building this Friday evening with Ray Pearl and his Musical Gems furnishing the music. The orchestra features outstanding entertainers including Rita Jean Carson, Eddie Santani, and the Three Jewels vocal trio.

• In Tom Cheesman’s annual subscription renewal and letter sent from Pacific Grove, California : “You would have enjoyed the truckload of calla lilies my neighbor picked from his garden yesterday. He donated 1,500 to the churches and to the sunrise service cross. They are beautiful blossoms with stems from three to six feet long. I think you frost-bitten Missourians pay around $10 to $12 a dozen for that kind of blossoms.”

April 5, 1973

• Mr. Jimmie Hedgpeth, 67, a lifelong resident of the Rock Port community, died of a heart attack March 30. A member of Rock Port’s city council, Mr. Hedgpeth was elected president and had been acting as mayor during the past year.

• Allen Motors, operated by Jim Allen and his son, Jim, are opening a new car dealership in Rock Port Friday, April 6, with Plymouth, Chrysler, and Dodge. The cars will be on display at their place of business at 124 S. Main. The last Chrysler dealer in Rock Port was Lee Vogel, who closed out of his business in 1956 after a disastrous fire.

• The first girl’s track team in the history of Rock Port High School, coached by Janet Deck, has new track sweats so they don’t have to “run in rags.” Team members include Sue Knierim, Gayle Hendrix, Susan Adamson, Karen Gebhards, Susan Lauritsen, Dayan Garst, Donna Haer, Michele Heits, Kim Burke, and Lisa Brown.

• Blue Jay Corner’s Reflections On The Year – What do you remember most about school?: Mark Cox – When our lockers were in the bathroom; Mary Sheldon – The swinging trapeze; and Vickie Burke – Eating lunch in the hall when we went to Watson in junior high.

April 2, 1998

• The Rock Port Youth Wrestling Club presented the Rock Port Schools with a check for $1,500. The money is to go towards the new wrestling mats.

• Chelsea Ashford’s drawing won a spot in the “Building Families” calendar. This calendar is distributed by the Missouri Association for Community Action to all the Community Service Inc. employees and all the Head Start families in the state of Missouri.

• Forty Rock Port Elementary students participated in a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon. Cory Amthor won a boom box for the most money collected – over $400.

• The Rock Port High School Drama Department will be performing “Pirate Island.”

• Rock Creek was running bank full Monday morning, March 30. Temperatures have been extreme, from -19 to 79 degrees. The ground is already saturated so the runoff has been great.
