• A portable iron lung arrived in Tarkio Friday night at City Hall and is now ready for use at any time for anyone in Tarkio or Atchison County. Purchase of the respirator was $1,200.
• The Altar Society of St. Paul’s Catholic Church will sponsor a dance featuring both square and round dancing at the Tarkio Community Building Wednesday night, April 28. A five-piece orchestra will play.
• Eight children from the Royal school northwest of Tarkio were taken on a tour of Kansas City Thursday and Friday of last week. They visited the Kansas City Water Works, William Rockhill Nelson Art Gallery, Swope Park, the Plaza, Coco-Cola Bottling Works, Liberty Memorial tower, Union Station, Chevrolet Assembly Plant, and the Kansas City Power & Light Company.

• Commencement ceremonies at Tarkio College will be held Sunday, May 13, in Schechter Auditorium. Degrees will be awarded to 123 graduates at the 87th annual commencement. Dr. Archibald Woodruff, Chairman of the Tarkio College Board of Directors and President of the University of Hartford, will deliver the commencement address.
• Cubmaster C.L. McAdams reported that a good number of parents saw just about everything to be expected in the Cubmobile Test Races on Main Street. Everything from knocking front ends from under their cars, to almost making a complete turn-about on their trip down Main, or hitting a pole along the street, but nothing serious.
• Vehicles left parked on city streets over 24 hours will be towed in at the owner’s expense, according to City Marshall J.C. Henson.
• Greg Prather, Superintendent of the Tarkio R-I Schools, resigned effective July 1 at a special meeting of the Tarkio Board of Education.
• The Atchison County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol issued an order to stay off the incomplete portion of I-29. Drivers caught driving on the incomplete portion will be issued summonses.

• The Westboro Lions Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner held April 18 at the Westboro United Methodist Church. Six of the charter members were in attendance, including Robert Dunham, Alton Hanrath, O.A. Kelim, Glen Larson, George Laur, and Dean Tiemann. The Maryville Lions Club started the Westboro Lions Club and in turn, 30 years ago, the Westboro Lions Club started the Tarkio Lions Club.
• The Tarkio and Westboro Lions Clubs held their annual Bike-A-Thon April 18 in Westboro. The first place boy and girl winners each received a new bicycle. They were Carmen Herrick and Brandon Barker.
• As if dropping a foot of snow on the area a month ago wasn’t enough, tornadoes ripped through the area Tuesday, April 14. The worst of the storm hit north of St. John’s Lutheran Church near Westboro, Missouri, and in the Blanchard area. Power lines were down, barns were destroyed, trees were uprooted, and sheds were in pieces.
• Seventy-nine Atchison County sixth grade students participated in the D.A.R.E. graduation April 17 at Rock Port. The overall essay winner was Ashley Knierim from Tarkio. Other winners were Curtis Grossman, Fairfax; Shawn Shineman and Heath Haynes, Rock Port; and Amy Tullis, Tarkio.
