May 7, 1948

• Rev. Kenneth Israel, pastor of the Fairfax Baptist Church, will be a member of the high school faculty next year. He is teaching the present term at Elk Dale.

• Guy Graves, who keeps pretty close tabs on local events, tells The Forum that, counting the 24 graduates in this year’s class, Fairfax High School has graduated 786 persons since the high school was established.

• Saturday afternoon, the four Shineman brothers held a barbers’ convention in Fairfax in Will Shineman’s shop. All four are barbers.

• The expansion of bus service throughout the Middle West has given Fairfax two more buses each day, bringing the total to six and there are rumors that even more Kansas City to Omaha buses will soon be routed over Highway 275.

• Winston Graves has been appointed regular carrier on Rural Route No. 1 out of Fairfax and began his work as permanent carrier May 1. Mr. Graves has been a temporary carrier on the route since March 1947. There has been no regular carrier on Route I since the retirement of Worley Flanagan in the fall of 1946.

• Mrs. Emma C. Whitford, one of Fairfax’s eldest citizens, celebrated her 95th birthday Monday, May 3. She was guest of honor at a dinner at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. S. Donnell.

May 10, 1973

• A field of 20 class S track teams competed for the District track title last Friday in Maryville. Fairfax placed 4th. Jim Davis won both the high and low hurdles and long jumper Mike Hawkins placed 2nd with a jump of 19’10 1/4”. Miler Jim Stoner finished 3rd with a time of 4:55.1.

• A tree planting program undertaken by Fairfax Community Betterment is nearly complete. Sixteen trees and nine bushes were planted at Fair Haven Housing complex Monday. Charles Moore and Jim Fisher loaned their trucks to transport the nursery stock and Richard Kemerling, David Kemerling, Gary Smith, and Danny Kemerling helped plant.

• One of the all-time problems at the hospital has been corrected through the installation of a low volume, high coverage, public address system. The project was funded by the hospital auxiliary.

• Mr. and Mrs. Don Maris joined a number of Shriners from Moila Temple in St. Joseph on an eight-day trip to Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

• James H. Thompson found a giant mushroom measuring 10 inches high and 12 inches in circumference west of Fairfax. The springtime favorites have been plentiful this year due to heavy rains.

• The Mane Thing moved this week to its new building on Main Street. The building is the former Atchison-Holt Ambulance office. Betty Wennihan has owned The Mane Thing a year.

• Bill Hecker, son of Mrs. Jim Schooler, was a member of the Special Assignment team selected as March Eagle Award winners and honored with a luncheon on March 11 by TWA. Bill began as a part-time agent at MCI. He was promoted to full-time EIC and is known for his excellent passenger handling skills.

• The Fairfax FFA Chapter attended the 70th State FFA Convention April 16 and 17 in Columbia. Those attending were Trudy Heitman, Patty Heitman. Amanda Wheeler, Katrina Ball, Jason Kemerling, Jacob Smith, David Gomel, and Dustin Graves.
