May 7, 1948

• Coach Hinderliter’s trackmen again came through to top the district track and field meet at Maryville May 1 against 13 other class C high schools in northwest Missouri. Arnold Meyerkorth was high man taking firsts in the 100 and 220-yard dashes and then anchoring the half-mile relay team to victory, giving him a total of 11 1/4 points.

• Carl Holden was roused from his sleep about midnight Thursday night when the horn of his automobile sounded. Investigation disclosed a large ’possum resting on the horn button. The animal had been placed in the Holden car by some of the owner’s playful friends.

• The Burlington railway company is installing a warning signal light in Phelps City where Highway No. 4 crosses the Burlington tracks. This crossing has long been a danger spot and has been the scene of at least one fatal accident in recent years.

May 3, 1973

• Mrs. Lela Jackson has donated the use of her property, the old school yard, for a play ground for the children of Phelps City. Residents turned out in mass to cut weeds and grass and clean up trash. Swing sets were donated by Mrs. Linda Holmes and Mrs. Cashie Ploof.

• With just one grab, Bluford LaHue got a fistfull of mushrooms, 11 to be exact. The lucky find was revealed to be west of the rock dam, but he did not disclose which rock dam. Mushrooms are not being found in abundance this year as they were last year. Some people even turned down mushrooms last year, which is unheard of around these parts. For those who like to eat them, but not hunt, the price is $1.50 per pound or $3 per gallon.

• An 18-year-old local boy escaped from the Nodaway County Jail in Maryville, Missouri. It is believed he pried up a steel plate in the floor, gaining entrance to the basement. It is also suspected he had a small hacksaw which he used to saw through the supports of the steel plate. This is his third escape from authorities over the years.

• Additional damage reported on the storm that ripped through Atchison County April 19 was considerable. Fuelling Insurance and Real Estate reported that one trailer was completely destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Erickson and son, Damond, had left their trailer home northwest of Tarkio to seek shelter at her parents. The trailer, which was anchored down, turned over on its side and a utility pole sliced down through the bedroom where the baby could have been.

• Winners of the Pinewood Derby races held for Cub Scout Pack 59 of Rock Port April 28 at the Methodist Church were: Webelo Billy Alloway, 1st; Cub Mike Pfeil, 2nd; and Cub Doug Lane, 3rd.

April 30, 1998

• In the “Chats” column: “We have $15 toward our 4th of July Fireworks Display. Mound City has $1,500. Let’s get started and make the display the best ever.” “Our Susette Meyerkorth was elected to the Missouri Press Ad Manager Board of Directors at the annual meeting last week.”

• The Board of Directors of Rock Port Telephone Company has named Raymond Henagan as the new chief executive officer and general manager. Henegan brings 27 years of telecommunication experience to his new position.

• Thanks to a new piece of equipment – a defibrillator – a contractor at Cooper Nuclear Station exhibiting the symptoms of a heart attack has now recovered and been released from the hospital. The station’s medical response team had purchased the machine last fall and recently became qualified to use it.
