May 14, 1948

• J.C. Penney, noted chain store founder, will be heard tonight at the local high school auditorium by the 33 seniors of the graduating class of Tarkio High School and guests.

• Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Wolfe of Tarkio have been notified that the body of their son, the late Pfc. Clarence E. Wolfe, will arrive in New York aboard the United States Army Transport Lawrence Victory.

• On Memorial Day, May 30, Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post No. 199 will hold a dedication worship service at the new building on Third Street. A memorial plaque will be unveiled by Mrs. Clarence Brunk, who sacrificed two sons to her country in World War II.   

May 17, 1973

• Tarkio girls captured the girls’ district track championship at Bethany. This was the first time a girls’ district track meet has been held in the state of Missouri. Tarkio’s Carmen Bywater was the meet’s outstanding performer with a 1st in the 100 yard dash, 2nd in the high jump, and was a member of the winning 440 yard relay team with Krista Green, Judy Hull, and Nancy Davidson. Jill Vette won the 880 yard dash in school record time.

• Festivities for the 87th annual commencement exercises for 125 graduates of Tarkio College were held last weekend. Dr. Claude Templeton, vice-chairman of the Tarkio College Board of Directors, presented a certificate of merit signifying the Mule Barn Theatre as a National Historic landmark to Dr. Eldon E. Breazier, President.

• Nine Tarkio College basketball players and head coach Wayne Davison will leave May 21 for a month’s tour of England and Scotland. The team will play top basketball teams in the British Isles including games in Edinborough, Sheffield, and London.

• Mrs. Florene McCoy of Tarkio was awarded the senior cane at the annual Tarkio College Honors Convocation. The senior cane is awarded annually to a member of the faculty or staff at the college who has done the most to help the class during its four years on campus. It was first presented in 1934. Mrs. McCoy is the third woman to receive it.

• Mrs. Clarence Corbin was voted as the 1973 Mother of the Year in the Tarkio Chamber of Commerce program. Besides her own two children, she has for many years contributed to the development of numerous children as an elementary school teacher.

• A mother cat belonging to Laura Niles of Tarkio is nursing an orphaned baby opossum along with her own kittens. The baby opossum was the only survivor when a car ran over its mother and five siblings. Laura had been feeding the baby by hand until her cat had kittens and she decided to see if the cat would take the baby opossum as her own.

• Tarkio Elementary first graders participated in Western Day activities May 8. They showcased their newly learned square dancing talents for family and friends.

• Shaun Defenbaugh and Ann Hurst were named Tarkio High School Outstanding Senior Athletes.

• The Tarkio Post Office and Tarkio Academy teamed up for the 4th annual Food Drive May 9. A total of 2,500 pounds of food was collected.
