Tessa Rolf was an Area 1 Agricultural Education Proficiency winner. Dan Lesher placed second in the state in Vegetable Production. Tessa and Dan are Tarkio FFA members.

Several FFA members from Atchison County recently attended the 95th annual Missouri FFA State Convention. The students competed in special events, attended workshops and speeches, and received awards for their accomplishments.

The Missouri FFA has 26,716 members representing 356 chapters. The national organization has more than 850,000 members representing 8,995 chapters in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

TARKIO FFA

Seven Tarkio FFA members attended the convention.

Josie King, Tessa Rolf, and Daniel Lesher, seniors at Tarkio High School, received their State FFA Degree.

Daniel Lesher received the second place Missouri FFA Vegetable Production Proficiency Award. Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees, or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Vegetable production is one of 46 proficiency award areas recognized at the state level. Missouri Vegetable Growers Association sponsored this award.

Tessa Rolf was the Area winner in Agricultural Education.

The Dairy Foods Team of Kamryn Brown, Alyson Wooten, Lizzie Schlueter, and Abbie Harms also took part in the competition.They placed 30th overall.

FAIRFAX FFA

Four Fairfax FFA members also attended the convention. They are Braden Graves, Kendal Straub, Charlie Smith, and Jasey Smith.

Charlie and Jasey attended the business session on Thursday as delegates for the chapter. They then got to attend the first session of the State FFA Convention. During this session, they got to hear reflections from some of the 2022-2023 Missouri State Officer team and remarks from Missouri Department of Agriculture Director, Chris Chinn.

Kendal spent her time at convention singing with the Missouri State FFA Choir. They spent Thursday rehearsing and then they performed on Friday.

Charlie gave a speech in the Division II Prepared Public Speaking Contest. Missouri Army National Guard and Missouri Army ROTC sponsors the competition, which requires contestants to deliver a four-to-six-minute speech based on an agriculture topic they have selected and researched. The contestants present their speech in front of a panel of judges and then undergo an additional four minutes of questions. The event helps students to polish logical thinking and verbal skills needed in the classroom. After the first round, Charlie secured a spot in the top six. This meant that she went back to give her speech for a second time, to a new panel of judges. Results were not announced until the fifth session on Friday night. Charlie got to go on stage for the results and presentation of plaques. She ended up fifth place out of the state of Missouri.

Braden Graves was honored on Friday during the fifth session where he received his Missouri State FFA Degree. The State Degree is the highest honor a state association can bestow on its FFA members.

ROCK PORT FFA

Nine Rock Port FFA members attended the state convention.

Peyton Lager, Brecken Kelly, and Rylee Jenkins received the Missouri State FFA Degree.

The Farm Management CDE Team of Ryan Athen, Peyton Lager, Ryan Lucas, and Caleb Lucas participated in the farm management career development event at the FFA Convention. They placed 21st out of 47 teams in the competition. Individuals in this contest analyzed real-life business problems and completed a detailed exam to prove their understanding of economic principles. Participants used what they learned in their agricultural business classes to compete. Skills the students apply in the event will help them face even greater challenges in their professional lives.
