The Allen-Schiffern American Legion Auxiliary Unit 199 met May 15, 2023, with six members attending at first, then another member joined, making a quorum. President Linda Kaye Payton opened an informal meeting.
Roll call was answered with everyone giving their total activity hours and money spent from the month of April.
The minutes of the last meeting were read by Secretary Barb Hines and approved as read. The financial report was given by Treasurer Sheridan Mires and approved.
Membership was discussed. There are still members who need to return their dues to Barb Hines. It was discussed that if dues are not paid their membership could be dropped.
The Memorial Day lunch menu and set-up were discussed and confirmed. The dinner will be May 29 following the services at the cemeteries. Members need to be at the Legion building by 10:00 a.m. to set up tables, chairs, and the food area. Linda Kaye will confirm with the absent members what they are bringing.
American Legion Family National Poppy Day is Friday, May 26, 2023. Members will be distributing poppies in memory and in honor of all veterans. They will be located at several community businesses on Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27. Remember and support our veterans!
The district meeting will be held June 3 in Savannah. Let Linda Kaye know by May 29 if you would like to go.
Convention will be held July 13-16 in Springfield. Sheridan Mires will be installed July 16 as American Legion Auxiliary Department President of Missouri. Anyone wanting to go for the installation ceremony should contact Linda Kaye. The auxiliary extended its congratulations to Sheridan.
Election of officers for the new year was held with the following results: Linda K. Payton, President; Barb Hines, 1st vice-president; K.C. Hines, 2nd vice-president; Sheridan Mires, secretary/treasurer; Donna Payne, historian; Judy Grundel, chaplain; and McKenzie Hines, sergeant-at-arms. Members hope to have another successful year.
The auxiliary did not lose a member this year and did not need to drape our charter.
All Atchison County units will be hosting the September district meeting. More information will be given to the units closer to September.
Judy, the new chaplain, gave a closing prayer. Linda Kaye declared the meeting adjourned. The next meeting will be August 14, 2023.
