• The annual repair and recoating of Highway No. 4 west of Rock Port is underway. The roadway was scarified last week, and oil will be applied shortly.
• Mr. and Mrs. Hal Burke have been advised that they are the grandparents of a son, Richard Cleveland, born May 16 to Mr. and Mrs. George Burke of Tucson, Arizona.
• Bob Sawyer, until recently associated with the management of the Ritz Cafe, has leased the highway restaurant on the hill west of Rock Port on No. 275 and is reopening The Top Kick at that location.
• Mrs. Sarah A. Payne, 85, longtime resident of the Watson community, passed away May 22. She came to Atchison County with her parents at the age of three, the family settling at the old Missouri river town of Sonora in northwest Atchison County.
• No less than 200 members of A.A.O.N.M.S. (Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine) gathered at the Memorial Building Wednesday evening for a fish dinner and a get-together. They came from St. Joseph and the four-county area which comprises the NO-A-H (Nodaway, Atchison, Holt, and Nodaway) club.

• A total of 316 persons attended the Rock Port Alumni Banquet, the largest turn-out in several years. Mrs. Dean Meyerkorth, Alumni Association treasurer, gave as one reason for the large attendance the largest senior class in Rock Port history, 62 graduates for the class of 1973.
• Lloyd Jay Gildersleeve, Rock Port, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gildersleeve, received a Juris Doctorate degree with distinction from the College of Law at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, at commencement ceremonies held May 19.
• Miss Shiela Cooper will be installed as Worthy Advisor of Rainbow at installation of officers May 27, at the lodge hall in Rock Port. Other officers installed at the time will be: Teri Hendrix, Worthy Associate Advisor; Kathy Burke, Charity; Kim Burke, Hope; and Nancy McCoy, Faith.
• Rock Port’s cancer drive chairman, Mrs. Robert Lee Stanton, reports that her workers have collected $1,035.54 toward this year’s fight against cancer.

• The home of Kelley and Amy Herron received heavy damage in a thunderstorm that hit Atchison County May 15. The Herrons live on Route T, northeast of Rock Port.
• Thirty-one seniors received diplomas in commencement exercises Sunday, May 17, at Rock Port R-II School. Angela Moran was valedictorian and Peter Batschelet was salutatorian.
• The Rock Port Rotary Club welcomed a team of five business and professional men and women from Rotary District 2730 in Japan as part of the Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange program. The group arrived in the United States April 17 and visited Rock Port May 9.
• The National Honor Society has selected Aubrey Chamberlain and Chris Gebhards as the 4th Quarter Good School Citizens.
• The Rock Port High School track teams competed in the 1A District 8 Track Meet Saturday, May 16, in Maryville. The Blue Jays came out on top with 143 points and the Lady Jays placed fourth with 62 points. Brooke Ireland set a new district record of 37’10.5” in the shot put.
