June 4, 1948

• The Klump brothers have sold their Klump Grocery store, which has been in operation for 45 years, to Miles R. James and son, Thomas A. James, both of Riverton, Iowa. Miss Hermie Bosenberg and Kay Lewis have been long-time employees.

• Harlan Wray of Hamburg recently bought the Denholm station and store at Linden Junction.

• Miss Betty Smith, a graduate of Rock Port High School with the class of 1946, has entered the employ of the Citizens’ Bank.

• Rock Port City Park was the scene of a Scout camporee from Friday evening to Sunday noon with Rock Port, Tarkio, Watson, and Westboro Scouts represented. A total of 55 Scouts and leaders took part with 45 boys passing 125 tests.

• A story told last week was that when Mr. and Mrs. Joe D’Angelo moved to El Dorado Springs, Missouri, they told a neighbor that they had formerly lived in Rock Port. That neighbor remarked, “Why I used to teach in Rock Port and lived in the home of Mrs. Gertrude Bird!” This man is W. W. Sunderwirth, who has become prominent in Southeast Missouri and has served in the state legislature. No matter where you go, you’ll find a former Rock Porter.

• Gus Knierim, native of this county and lifelong resident here, died at his home just west of Rock Port Friday, May 28. He was born in Atchison County on February 19, 1871, to Henry and Elizabeth Cloepfil Knierim.

May 31, 1973

• Mr. and Mrs. Jim Smith sold their home at 616 S. Market Street in Rock Port to Mrs. Dean Bedell.

• Mr. and Mrs. Richard Garst of Watson were the lucky “one in five thousand” last Saturday when their names were drawn from among that number for a trip to Las Vegas. The drawing was part of the grand opening ceremonies of a clothing store in Nebraska City.

• Mushrooms eight inches in height were found by Sean and Berri Easley of Rock Port. The mushrooms were all found in one spot in a deep ditch where there wasn’t much light. Even late in the season the mushrooms were real fresh.

• Despite delays due to weather, the Rock Port swimming pool is on schedule to open June 10. The cast-iron pool fill pipe was replaced with plastic pipe and the concrete sun bathing area was enlarged.

May 28, 1998

• Dickinson Community Investment Corporation announced that a house located at 108 College in Rock Port has been renovated and is being offered for sale. Local contractors, including Burke and Sons Lumber and Chris Construction, were used for the rehabilitation. The three-bedroom home is priced at $38,000.

• The Rock Port Blue Jays Track Team was named the 1A State Track champions with a total of 84 points. The boys also won in 1979, 1988, and 1993-96.

• Rock Port Schools named Raymond Eickhoff as 7-12 Teacher of the Year and Marty Farley as K-6 Teacher of the Year.

• Missouri Special Olympics Summer Games were held at Fort Leonard Wood May 14-16. Attending from our area were Jennifer Greeley, Jennifer Brown, Martha Greeley, and Leola Brown. Jennifer Greeley won a gold medal for her 2.3M tennis ball throw. Jennifer Brown won gold in the 100M walk.
