June 11, 1948

• No little excitement was caused at the Marvin Schooler home Friday morning when Spot, the Shetland pony of Jimmie and Barrie Schooler, became the proud mother of a colt. The boys have named her Star and wouldn’t trade her for the best farm in Atchison County.

• At last, actual construction work on the Fairfax Community Hospital building is about to get underway. A shipment of cement is expected in a few days and as soon as it arrives, work of pouring the footings will start.

• A new pole light has been installed in the city park and it lights up a nice area of the park. This will be suitable for picnics and evening gatherings. Any group wishing to use the park for this purpose is welcome to do so.

• Soon, Fairfax streets will present a picture reminiscent of the Old West, for members of both the American Legion and Kiwanis Club have voted that all members must wear either a cowboy hat, shirt, or tie and any other western clothing that they care to wear. The members will begin wearing the “new look” July 1 through the end of the rodeo.

June 14, 1973

• Eleven young women entered the Community Betterment Fairfax Fair Queen Contest for the 8th annual event June 21-23. They are Reta McCartney, Brenda Hawkins, Kristi Hunter, Robin Barr, Sara Kottman, Sharon Swindler, Jane Johnson, Debbie Moore, Laura Bradfield, April Ilsley, and Beri Wennihan. The fair weekend activities will also include a parade, baby show and talent show, performance by The Wilder Family (the Midwest Partridge Family), baked goods auction, rides for children, as well as exhibits and food stands, giveaways, and much more!

• A youth center was proposed to the city council and accepted. The center will be in the basement of the park stage and be available to the youth six out of seven days of the week.

• SFC Robert Taylor and his wife and children arrived June 1st for a visit with relatives here after spending three years in Germany. After visiting Mrs. Violette Haun and Miss Barbara Taylor in Fairfax and Mrs. Ethel Taylor in Rock Port, they will be stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas.

• Greg Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Deene Lawrence, is in Washington, D.C., this week participating in the national spelling bee and getting a first-hand view of the capitol.

• The Ag Power, Inc. business owned by Lane Seymour has moved to a temporary office in the Sly building on Main Street. Lane is a business consultant and will operate the business from the new location for the present time.

• Rebecca McDowell Cook, Missouri Secretary of State, recognized the Fairfax team of Chance Clement, Troy Simmons, and Courtney Sinkhorn, first place regional winners of the Greater Kansas City Stock Market Game. The value of their stock portfolio at the end of the game was $103,910.
