June 18, 1948

• Everett Cochran suffered a four and a half inch scalp wound last Friday when he was working with a tractor at his farm 12 miles east of Tarkio. A lever on the tractor flew back and hit him on the back of the head. He was able to make his way to a neighbor’s house where an ambulance from Burlington Junction was called.

• Services will be held for retired Tarkio merchant Roy Millier, 67. Roy Clifford Millier was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, January 18, 1881. When he was one he was brought to Tarkio by his parents and resided here most of his life. In the fall of 1916, Mr. Millier went into the grocery business in Tarkio with his father and took over in 1930.

• In a special meeting, it was decided to organize a Boosterette Club to assist the Tarkio Booster Club in carrying on promotional and constructive work for the benefit of Tarkio.

• On May 25, about 60 persons gathered at the Prairie Hill Cemetery to clean it up and have a basket dinner together. A power lawn mower has been purchased and a man employed to take care of the cemetery.

June 21, 1973

• A tragedy in Denver, Colorado, took the lives of two with ties to Tarkio. Randy Ray Walker, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Walker, Jr., former Tarkio residents, was on his bicycle in a flooded area and fell into a strong current and drowned. Michael Leonard Branch, 20, who was engaged to Randy’s sister, Sydney Sue Walker, dove in after the boy and also drowned. Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Walker, Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Corbin, all of Tarkio, are the grandparents of Randy.

• The Tarkio scene was considerably brightened Tuesday by the arrival of “The Spokesmen,” 38 bicycle riders ranging in age from 11 to 65. They are on a 2,000 mile trip from Houston, Texas, to Winnepeg, Canada. At times, the group pedals up to 90 miles a day. The group is accompanied by a motorcycle escort, two cooks, a trailer containing their kitchen and sleeping bags, and a Sierra Jeep.

• The Tarkio College Owls won all eight of their basketball games on their tour of Scotland and England.

June 18, 1998

• Over 200 children attended the Vacation Bible Schools held at the local churches.

• Rebekah Koch, a 1998 graduate of Tarkio High School, received a $1,000 scholarship by Dobson Communications Corporation. She was one of 13 high school seniors selected from nine states to receive the Promoting Rural Individuals and Development (PRIDE) Scholarship.

• The Tarkio Rodeo was held Friday and Saturday, June 12 and 13. Tifani Beason of Tarkio was the top local finisher. She won first place in Breakaway Roping. Other local competitors included Dave Beason with Steve Merrigar and Marty Howard in two Team Roping  rides, John Currie in Bull Riding, Matt Wennihan and Jerry Espey in Team Roping, and Shelly Wennihan in Breakaway Roping and Barrel Racing.
