• The body of Pfc. William R. Lindsay, son of Artie A. Lindsay of Tarkio, was due to arrive at San Francisco on or about June 28 from Manila aboard a U.S. Army transport.
• The Mound City News-Independent, published by Ray and Ralph Taylor, was the victim of a fire and explosion last Saturday. The office apprentice had started a fire under the melting pot when flames ignited gasoline in the tank. The tank exploded, blowing out the front and rear of the office and scattering equipment. Five employees escaped injury, but five bystanders were injured by flying glass.
• The 93rd birthday of Mrs. Mary Warneke of near Rock Port was celebrated June 28 at the city park. Mrs. Warneke was crowned Atchison County Sweetheart at last fall’s centennial observance of the annual fair, as being the oldest native of Atchison County in attendance.
• Pfc. Jack D. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith of Langdon, wrote for an address change for his subscription. Pfc. Smith is with the 6th Division in Korea. He works in the division medical supply as clerk and typist.
• Atchison-Holt Electric Cooperative has begun the construction of 200 miles of additional lines. These new lines will cover territory from Shenandoah, Iowa, to just north of Craig, Missouri, and will serve some 400 additional patrons.

• Rock Port’s first swim meet of the summer was held June 22 at Tarkio. Tarkio scored 206 points for 1st place, followed by Savannah with 173 in 2nd and Rock Port with 159 in 3rd.
• Beginning his career as county collector in 1958, Dean Curnutt first ran for office on a dare. Now serving his fourth term, he does not plan to run again unless a current proposal in the state legislature passes that would put county collectors on a salary basis the same as other officials.
• Employees of Mid Continental Waterproofing Co. of Ft. Scott, Kansas, began sandblasting and tuckpointing on the Atchison County Courthouse and jail in Rock Port this week. The work includes color coating and waterproofing the bricks, tuckpointing the white mortar, painting all the woodwork and trim replacing broken glass, and caulking the windows.
• Dean Bolton of Fairfax has offered to pay the fees for four years of college and buy Clifton, Arizona, girl Eleanor Stacy, 13, any dress she might need for high school graduation after she was sent home from her eighth grade graduation because her dress did not conform with school rules. The dress was a handmade yellow-flowered dress instead of a pastel dress.

• Maye Alloway of Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, was recently crowned 1998 Ms. Pleasant View. May is 90 years young and was born August 27, 1908, two miles south of Camel Corner near present day Maitland, Missouri.
• When travelers Jeff and Renee Young and Mark and Kathy Longacre and families entered Rock Port’s Tourist Information Center on I-29, they were greeted with a warm welcome as the facility’s 2 millionth visitors. They were presented with several gifts bearing the Missouri logo.
• On Tuesday, June 16, Elaine Lewis was notified by Federal Express that she was a $2,000 cash prize winner in the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes Giveaway. Elaine is proof positive that the Publisher’s Clearing House statement, “You don’t have to buy to win,” is true.
