• Mr. and Mrs. Orville Hecker received word that the body of their son, Private First Class Delbert T. “Ted” Hecker, has been returned from Europe on the Army Transport Oglethorpe Victory, which was due in New York July 8. Also on the transport was the body of Private First Class Harold D. Wooten, whose next of kin is Anna E. Wooten of Rock Port.
• Former Fairfax resident Mrs. Bessie Lawrence was named the winner of the $30,000 jackpot in the Abbott & Costello Kid Show radio contest. Prizes she won for writing the winning letter total $30,000 in value and she and her husband have gone to Hollywood, where she will appear on the Abbott & Costello show July 24 to collect the prizes.
• Donald Griffey, 17, suffered fatal burns and injuries in an explosion at the Mac Flanagan home near the Dotham store east of Fairfax Friday evening. He died at the Maryville hospital Saturday morning. Donald went to the basement of the Flanagan home to turn a valve on the water system that sends water to a pen of hogs. Being dark, he struck a match to find the light cord. Gas must have escaped the bottle gas hot water heater creating the explosion.The explosion must have lifted the house from its foundation for a telephone ground wire was snapped and a radio ground wire indicated it had been jerked up several inches.

• The Union Mill Opry has been signed to appear in Fairfax City Park Thursday, August 3, by Fairfax Community Betterment. It is a two-hour country music and comedy show by the Boswell family and their troop from Edgerton.
• Unusual moving techniques will be employed in the county when Farm Movers Corporation sends its big blue helicopter to move a large number of grain bins recently sold by the federal government. Sheriff Seymour has advised residents to not be alarmed when they spot the “Big Blue Bird” hovering above. Stories of cattle rustlers spotting their prey by such means has caused much suspicion.
• Maralee Sweeton, 16-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Sweeton of Rock Port, will represent Missouri in the National High School Rodeo in Ogden, Utah, next month. She was chosen queen of the annual Missouri State High School Rodeo in Tarkio. Fifteen-year-old Scott Fogg of Mound City was named all-around cowboy at the Missouri State High School Rodeo in Tarkio.

• Sabrina Nemyer, who is the team mascot for the Fairfax Bulldogs, attended cheerleading camp at NWMSU in Maryville, Missouri, and was awarded the All-American Mascot Award.
• R.K. Breit Construction is working on the new storm sewer being laid in Fairfax. Highway 59 in Fairfax will be closed one day so that the storm sewer can be put underneath the highway.
• A card shower for Preshie Mills of Fairfax, Missouri, is being hosted by her great-grandchildren on August 1, 1998, to celebrate her 80th birthday.
• Dale Wennihan of Fairfax built display cases out of old barn boards and equipped them with glass doors and shelves so that his granddaughter, Shannon Jobes, can display her Ty Beanie Babies collection.
• The Wolverine 4-H Club has been working on a basketweaving project. A group of 15 4-H members and nine parents and guests made 32 baskets Monday and Tuesday, July 6 and 7, in the basement of the United Methodist Church in Fairfax.
• Fairfax varsity cheerleaders recently washed the windows of local businesses to raise money for new uniforms.
