July 16, 1948
• Mr. and Mrs. John Gregg have purchased the interest of Charles Burke in the Simon & Burke fountain business and are taking over this week.
• Two of the large cross-gutters on south Main Street, which had become badly cracked and broken, were replaced last week by a crew headed by Ab. Cargile. The chore of removing the heavy concrete was almost as much of a job as installing the new gutter.
• According to Tuesday’s dailies, it is going to cost more to get married in Missouri effective next Sunday. The price of marriage licenses goes up 50 cents. It is also said that divorces will cost 50 cents.
• Raymond Ottmann, local farmer, feeder, and truck-line operator, hit the all-time high for fat steers on the St. Joseph market Tuesday when he sold 38 head of choice, 1,195-pound steers at $40 per hundred-weight. The previous all-time high was established Monday with $39.50.
• Mr. and Mrs. Harmon C. Walker of Blanchard was visited by their son, Charles D. Walker, electrician’s mate in the U.S. Navy. He is stationed on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Philippine Sea and has spent the last six months with the fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
July 12, 1973
• The 1973 Rock Port swim team is the largest in several years, numbering 60 members. The team will have competed in seven meets by the end of the season.
• Cigarette smokers in Rock Port will find that the city tax on cigarettes will have doubled as of September 1. The tax will raise from the current two cents per pack to four cents.
• The frog jumping contest at the Rock Port 4th of July festivities was won with a team effort by Kim Burke and Bill Bunton. Their winning frog, Mr. Pikes, covered a distance of 8 feet, 4 inches in three leaps and won them $15 for first place.
• Luckily for Caroll Pfeil, two Brittany Spaniels held by the city received a reprieve when they were caught after getting out of a pen. Pfeil had assumed they’d return. Rock Port police kept them longer than usual because they were particularly valuable and figured they’d eventually be claimed.
July 9, 1998
• A red jade weeping crabtree was planted in loving memory of Opal Jones on the First Lutheran Church lawn. A dedication ceremony took place July 5.
• The Rock Port Sorosis Club celebrated 100 years in May at their annual luncheon. The ladies were all attired in hats and gloves, which was the fashion 100 years ago. The group was organized December 31, 1897.
• It was a great day of golf as 124 golfers teed off at the Citizens Bank & Trust 7th Annual Men’s Golf Day June 30 at the Rock Port Golf and Country Club. A total of $1,047.25 was generated through the festivities and was donated to the D.A.R.E. program.
• Little Mr. and Miss Rock Port were Chelsea Cooper, daughter of Danny and Sheila Cooper, and Codie Sloop, son of David and Samantha Sloop.
• After being owned for the past several years by Physicians Resources of Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Wallace Carpenter reclaimed ownership of the Rock Port Family Practice Center. He originally opened the facility July 1, 1952.
