• Lightning struck and killed Athel C. Ward, 28, as he was helping put up hay Wednesday afternoon on the J. B. Christensen farm three and one-half miles north of Tarkio. Ward was atop a load of hay in a wagon which was being pulled by a tractor when the lightning struck during a slight storm which seemed nothing in comparison to many storms often experienced in this vicinity.
• Mrs. Lula Cavinee of Tarkio has received a message from Washington, D.C., that her son, Pfc. Ray Dean Cavinee, is missing from Rapids Camp, Naknek Air Force base in Alaska. The Tarkio soldier had left the base July 11 to row across a nearby river and the boat he used was found capsized two miles from camp. Although an extensive search by plane and boat was made, the missing man has not been found.
• Dr. Mary Beth Godfrey, graduate of Tarkio College in the class of 1939, left Monday to practice medicine in a Hawaiian leper colony. She will spend one year in Hawaii as staff physician at the Kalaupapa leper colony on the island of Molokai.

• First National Teller Tells column: “Since men don’t wear hats these days, it is not possible to tip a hat to a sow or cow, so perhaps it would be best to bow low and salute as one passes a pig pen or a cattle feed yard. Certainly at present day prices, they have come into the realm of the upper crust.” “On display in our officers’ section over the fireplace are two fine examples of workmanship. Lester Kirk brought in a replica of the United States seal which he carved and painted and a likeness of a rooster using over 1,300 nails, brads, tacks, and pins.”
• Damp, soggy weather failed to daunt 120 area golfers as they competed for 720 prime sirloin steaks this past weekend on the Tarkio Golf Course in the third annual Best Ball Tournament. Each first place received 32 steaks, second place 20 steaks, third place 12 steaks, and fourth place eight steaks.
• The Tarkio Board of Education is presently considering possible ways of using or disposing of the old Tarkio Junior High School building.
• Jerry Litton, Congressman for Missouri’s 6th District, highlighted the successful Stockman’s Open House program held Saturday, July 21, at the Tarkio Community Building.
• The Tarkio Board of Education has set September 4 at the opening date of school for the 1973-74 school year. It is hoped that by that time, both the new elementary school and the new junior high will be completed and ready for occupancy.
• Fifty riders and 100 horses participated in the Atchison County 4-H Horse Show held at the Shamrock Ranch north of Tarkio. The show was put on by the Atchison County 4-H Horsemanship Boosters.

• Additional funds have been raised for the Tarkio Park Board’s fundraising campaign to raise money for new playground equipment.
• The Parkview Thrift Apparel at 305 Broad Street in Tarkio is changing its food pantry hours in August. Started as an adjunct to the food pantry, the shop offers consigned or donated clothing and miscellaneous items.
• Over 10 children are attending a summer theater camp conducted by Scott Hanson. The final performance will be held July 31 in the air-conditioned sanctuary of the Tarkio Presbyterian Church. Hanson will also perform “Casey at the Bat” during the C.A.B.A. tailgate party.
