July 30, 1948
• Ralph Greer Post No. 49 of the American Legion will host the 4th District Legion Convention in Rock Port August 8. An attendance of some 500 to 600 legionnaires from the 29 district posts is expected. A parade with drum and bugle corps will also be held.
• Mrs. Fred Meyerkorth ran a 40¢ ad looking for a piano to purchase for the Langdon Lutheran Church. She reports that she was deluged with replies and purchased a good piano at a bargain.
• Some 30 golfers from Auburn, Nebraska, will be in Rock Port Sunday morning to engage local golfers in a match. The men will golf Sunday morning and their wives will golf that afternoon.
• A flight of 40 airplanes flew over Rock Port with a roar Sunday morning shortly before noon. Solitary planes are an every day occurrence, but when they go over in large formations, it attracts more than a passing glance.
• An unfortunate accident Saturday night took the life of Thomas Ray King. Ray was run over by his neighbor when the man was driving his automobile into the alley to reach his garage and failed to see King because of high weeds.
July 26, 1973
• Atchison County students account for 29 of the 1,070 new freshmen who have been accepted at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. Eight are from Rock Port, 10 are from Tarkio, seven are from Fairfax, two are from Westboro, and two are from Watson.
• Deputy Wayne Templeton of the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department will leave both the Sheriff’s Department and Atchison County July 27. This will leave Atchison County with only one county-wide police officer other than the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
• Construction on the 100,000 gallon water tower being built west of Rock Port has slowed down by recent bad weather. The tower is 35-40 percent completed.
• An accident killed a family of four Monday afternoon on westbound U.S. 136, one mile west of the Nebraska state line, near the toll booth for the bridge. Lewis Hartwick, Jr., 28, the Poway, California, driver, his wife, Joan Marie, 26, and their children, Glen, 8, and Ann, 4, were drowned when their 1967 pickup with a camper shell went off the north side of the highway into the water about 12 foot deep.
July 23, 1998
• The Atchison County Library sponsored the performance of the Amazing Stories Adventure at the Rock Port Methodist Church July 20. The performance, put on by The Timestep Players Children’s Theatre based out of Chicago, Illinois, was held in conjunction with the summer reading program.
• Willard L. “Chief” Webster passed away Wednesday, July 15, at the age of 83. He was born August 15, 1914, in Watson, Missouri. During World War II, Willard served in the United States Navy from 1941-1945. A lifelong Watson/Rock Port area resident, he operated heavy equipment and ran a logging operation.
• Chats: “The Dog Days of Summer are here. A miracle occurred on Monday at 2:42 p.m. when both the Bank Midwest and Citizens Bank temperature gauges each registered 101 degrees. We’ve never seen them agree before.”
• The Rock Port Garden Club selected the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Keedy at 201 Sickler Drive as the Yard of the Month. The yard includes flowers and ferns, as well as a vegetable garden in the back yard.
