• At P. Hunter’s Stores: a C & H cane sugar, 100 lb. bag, $9; Tide, 31¢ for a large box; Folgers, drip or regular, 52¢ per pound; Carnation milk, tall can, 15¢; Hy-Klas ice cream, assorted flavors, 45¢ per quart; and Golden Crust bread, 16-oz. loaf, 10¢.

• Those who have feared a prolonged summer drought can be at ease now for a while, at least, as a heavy rain fell here Wednesday night of last week and most of the day Monday, leaving almost three inches.

• The Forum can not print pictures directly from a photograph. It is necessary to send the photograph to an engraver and have a half-tone cut made, and that takes from four to five days. People who bring pictures in for publication should bear this in mind.

• Jesse Mulvania, 82, died Tuesday afternoon at his home south of Phelps City, Missouri, from injuries he suffered about an hour earlier in a truck accident on the farm. Mr. Mulvania had lived in Atchison County for 45 years and was a prominent and highly respected farmer.

August 9, 1973

• Young fry will be delighted with the new playground installation. The hobby-horse type of devices (a car and train) are mounted on heavy coil springs and are near indestructible. They have been added to the well-equipped playground at the Fairfax school.

• Gary D. Burns of Fairfax has been appointed to the Atchison County Committee of the Farmers Home Administration.

• Grain bins were moved out of Fairfax this week not by helicopters, but by low trailers hauled by trucks. When met with overhead wires, some maneuvering with a tall pole was done to make the necessary clearance. The bins can not be moved on US 59, so were transported with caution on other roads out of the area.

• Gary Watson is the new administrator at Community Hospital starting Monday, August 13.

• Yard of the Month honors for August went to Bob and Marilyn Alldredge. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Thomson were given honorable mention.

• The Fairfax area received somewhere over two inches of rain Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The rain was accompanied by a severe thunderstorm, but no apparent damage was inflicted.

August 6, 1998

• A meeting was held at Trail Boss Restaurant in Rock Port on Thursday, July 30, for potential investors of Golden Triangle Energy Coop.

• Workmen from Hausman Roofing of St. Joseph, Missouri, have been busy tearing off the old roof of Community Hospital Association and installing new insulation and new sealant on the roof top. Some of the roof they are replacing is the original from 1949. The project will cost $172,405.

• The Miller family was vacationing at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, when son Tyson had one of his dreams come true. Nickelodeon’s “U Pick Nick” show was at the park theatre and the Millers not only attended, but Tyson was picked to go up on stage and participate. Tyson participated in a game where he was blindfolded and stood in a bucket filled with various things, and he had to guess what it was. He guessed he was standing in cereal, which was correct, and his team won. However, he was not the “team captain” so he wasn’t the one who was slimed or got a pie to the face.
