Family members made very groovy “potheads.” Sandy Sundberg’s pothead (far left) was chosen the winner. Another hip design was a Willie Nelson pothead (left) made by Maggie Crawford.

The 24th annual McAdams Family Reunion was held at Hickory Hollow Resort in Tightwad, Missouri, July 6-8, 2023. This year’s theme, “McWoodstock at Hippie Hollow Resort,” was enjoyed by 63 McAdams-type folk.

The family members participated in several “hippie” activities. Many dressed up as hippies with both purchased and homemade attire. A “pothead” contest was held with individuals entering their planted, pre-decorated terra cotta pots (some designs included Cheech and Chong, Willie Nelson, and Patrick Mahomes). Sandy Sundberg’s pothead was selected as the adult winner, with her sister, Mary McAdams Plummer, coming in second. The children’s pothead winners were Cate Crawford in first and Joe Crawford in second. The children had their faces painted, made lava lamps and stress balls, decorated pet rocks, and created potholders. Erin Brown also gave henna tattoos to anyone who wanted one. Maggie McAdams Crawford baked “pot” brownies, two of which had miniature kitchen pots in them. Those who found the pots in their brownies received a prize. Emma McAdams and Finn McAdams were the lucky winners. A white elephant gift exchange also took place. Some of the more unique items “gifted” included a hairy belly fanny pack, 60’s/70’s style stilettos, a fertility goddess wooden statue, and a McAdams Family Reunion survival kit equipped with McAdams Whiskey. Attendees enjoyed several “groovy” photo ops and campfire gatherings. Cindy McAdams Dean and Steve Riska provided their delicious Rollin Smoke BBQ & Catering LLC (located in Warrensburg, Missouri) smoked meat and sides on Saturday night. Besides structured activities, the family also enjoyed swimming, trips to local restaurants, antique stores, boutiques, and a winery/brick oven pizza/ice cream shop, and lake and trail views.

The weather was beautiful and the family was able to enjoy the weekend “far out” in the sticks. Next year’s gathering will be the 25th annual reunion, to take place July 11-13.
