August 20, 1948
• The Shields Manufacturing company, started two years ago by Tarkio College graduate Dean Shields, was completely destroyed by fire this week in Red Oak, Iowa. The plant had 20 men employed, making aluminum garage doors, livestock waterers, and metal chairs.
• A ceremony of the laying of the cornerstone of the new Assembly of God Church building in Tarkio at the corner of 5th and Main streets was held August 14. The cornerstone was a 1,300 pound block of carthage building stone. A steel box is sealed in a copper shell and set or built into the corner stone. It contains a Bible and short history of the Tarkio Church, as well as a few periodicals, a photograph of the pastor and his family, a photo of the head mason, Arthur Geist, and the head carpenter, C. H. McCoy.
• The donkey ball game will be held August 21 at the Community Park. All of the players except the pitcher and catcher will be mounted on donkeys and must ride from base to base. The Santa Fe bred burros have names corresponding with their personalities, such as: Mae West, a gal with a mind of her own; Superman, little but mighty; Frank Sinatra, the biggest Hee-Hawer; and Betty Grable, fat in the best places.
• A 96 degree temperature was the maximum recorded at the local U.S. Airways Communications Station. This was at 2:25 p.m. August 17. The following day at 5:28 a.m., the minimum temperature of 56 degrees occurred.
August 23, 1973
• The Tarkio Rotary Club won a towering first place trophy at the District Rotary Golf Tournament held August 15 in St. Joseph. Team members included Wayne Davison, Chuck Sheppard, Stan Irvine, Jerry Hill, Roy McIntosh, Mel Rogers, Jim Prather, and Darrell Marti. The lowest four scores of each team determined the winner.
• Robert Lee “Bob” Lade passed away August 18. He came to Tarkio in 1954 as coach at Tarkio High School. After two years he accepted a position at Tarkio College as coach and has been active there ever since, serving as athletic director and football, basketball, and track coach.
• Services were held for Lena Yoder McCloy, 69, on August 15. Mrs. McCloy was a graduate of Tarkio College and taught in the Tarkio Schools. For many years, she operated a children’s clothing store in Shenandoah, Iowa.

• Betty Lindsay of Tarkio, a licensed practical nurse, was recognized for her 10 years of service to the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
• Jerry Driskell of Tarkio recently caught a 60-pound flathead catfish. He caught the big fish on a throw line using a secret bait.
• The Tarkio Chamber of Commerce hosted a fundraising golf tournament August 14 at the Tarkio Golf Course. The Summa Pharmacy Team won the championship flight.
• Dr. Robert Grimm with Grimm Chiropractic in Tarkio, along with others, is planning on making a 2,200 mile trip on Labor Day weekend to an Indian reservation in Wolf Point, Montana. They will be taking food supplies, hand tools, and children’s coats, gloves, and scarves with them.
