August 27, 1948
• One of Tarkio’s Gold Star veterans, Pfc. William R. Lindsay, who died April 11, 1945, of wounds received in action on Luzon, was buried in Home Cemetery yesterday morning. Pfc. Lindsay served in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and finally Luzon.
• In order that Tarkiesta-goers may find the community park freer than usual of those tiny insects that are such pests, the park has been thoroughly sprayed with D.D.T. The spraying was done Monday of this week. Tarkiesta had a big day from dawn till after dark Wednesday, bringing in the long-prepared-for fourth anniversary celebration in Tarkio.
• Mr. and Mrs. John Pursell and daughter moved to the 203 Chestnut Street property formerly occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bolin. The Bolins moved into an apartment above the White Spot Cafe on Main Street.
August 30, 1973
• Callie Umbarger, noted cook and excellent pie baker, retired this week after many years of cooking in local restaurants. Although the number of pies she baked is not known exactly, during one year she baked over three thousand.
• Twenty-nine lettermen, 18 upperclassmen, and over 50 freshmen have reported for the Tarkio College football camp. In addition to head coach Robert Tucker, the Owl mentors are offensive receiver coach and trainer Mel Rogers, offensive and defensive line coach and offensive coordinator Gary Buzzard, and offensive back coach Bob Myers.
• Kenneth Woolsey, a Tarkio College graduate and son of Mrs. Lee Woolsey of Tarkio, Armament Development and Test Center’s Computer Sciences Laboratory’s Director, has been honored by the Association for Computing Machinery. He won appointment as a lecturer in the international organization’s lectureship program.
• The Clarence Wessler family represented Atchison County last week at the Missouri State Fair’s Farm Family Day. The Wesslers operate a grain-livestock farm northwest of Rock Port.

• The high temperatures and humidity returned just in time for the start of school. Classes at Tarkio R-I have been dismissed early to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. Temperatures in at least one classroom reached 102 degrees so those students went outside for class to the 96 degree temperatures in hopes of cooling off.
• Ask Elsie Fae – “I plan to attend the McGinty auction. I’m not looking for bargains, I just want to see who buys that stack of ‘Playboy’ magazines.” “The painters have finished my house…I made a mistake when I had them paint my door red. I’m getting half of Nick White’s business.”
• Seven Tarkio businesses were burglarized in the late hours of August 22 or early hours of August 23, with two other burglaries attempted.
• Dr. John W. Walter, DVM, has taken over Espey Vet Clinic in Tarkio, formerly owned by Jerry Espey of Tarkio. The clinic will be run under the new name of Atchison County Veterinary Clinic.
• Father Reginald Sander, OSB, is the new priest at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Tarkio. Father Sander is a member of a large family that included 15 brothers and sisters.
